Social Work

If you are someone who feels the call to aid those who need guidance during difficult transitions in their lives, the Saint Rose social work program will prepare you for a career as a human service professional.

According to Occupational Outlook Quarterly (Spring 2000, p.15), employment in the field of social work will grow much faster than average, driven by an aging population and a wider array of needed services. After earning your degree in social work from Saint Rose, you will hold the title of Beginning Generalist Social Work Practitioner-and you will be immediately employable. In fact, 100% of the graduates from our program have accepted jobs in their field within weeks of graduation.

THE SAINT ROSE DIFFERENCE
The social work program at Saint Rose offers a multidisciplinary approach with courses in areas such as psychology, biology and sociology. You will prepare for a career as a social worker by developing critical skills in assessment of and intervention with individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities. The social work faculty members strongly emphasize lifelong learning and ongoing professional development outside of class-related activities. You will have the opportunity to not only be a learner, but also a trainer of your peers.

The Social Work Organization
As a student interested in helping others, you will be surrounded by other service-minded individuals when you join the Social Work Organization. The Social Work Organization is actively committed to pursuing community service projects and fostering professional development among its members. The Social Work Organization strives to offer networking opportunities to its members by introducing them to Saint Rose social work alumni. Through this organization you will gather to discuss common interests with other social work majors and form long-lasting friendships.

OUR MENTORING FACULTY
The social work faculty at Saint Rose prides itself on offering a high level of individual attention to students. Together, social work majors and faculty members attend national and local conferences and workshops, where they co-present on various topics, providing a forum for interaction with experienced professionals in the field. Often, students gain insight into the issues facing today's social workers and make valuable contacts that are helpful in obtaining full-time jobs after graduation.

In addition, your education will never be in the hands of a teaching assistant-all Saint Rose social work majors are taught and advised by full-time professors. However, you are always eligible for additional assistance from a social work graduate assistant whenever you need further explanation or clarification on a topic.

The Social Work Program Advisory Board
As students are a vital part of curriculum assessment, they are represented on the Social Work Program Advisory Board.

FIELD EXPERIENCE
As a Saint Rose social work major you will complete two field experiences, totaling three semesters of hands-on training. You and your advisor will work together to customize your internship to your area of interest or specialization.
  • Your first field experience occurs during the second semester of your junior year when you complete a 15-week internship of eight hours per week; and
  • Your second field experience will span both semesters of your senior year when you intern at an agency for 12 hours per week. In conjunction with this internship you will complete a methods seminar and participate in a discussion group.

The College of Saint Rose is proud to announce that the social work undergraduate degree program has achieved initial accreditation by the Council on Social Work Education (C.S.W.E.). This accreditation gives prestige to the Saint Rose social work program and offers specific benefits to Saint Rose students and alumni. For example, Saint Rose social work majors may now join the National Association of Social Workers at the student rate and receive its highly regarded journal, Social Work. In addition, graduates of the program may apply for Advanced Standing in some social work master's degree programs at colleges such as Adelphi University, Rutgers University and Case Western University.

"Professional accreditation at the national level is an exacting and challenging process. I know that the entire College community joins President Sullivan and I in congratulating our colleagues in the Social Work Department for the recognition that their program has received," said Dr. William Lowe, vice president for academic affairs.
