Enjoying the same standards and expectations as a studio major, you will progress through our studio curriculum to develop a body of work that demonstrates independent creative thinking and artistic maturity.
Both the Bachelor of Science and the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art Education are approved degree pathways to New York State Initial Certification in Art Education, grades P-12. For the BFA, students will concentrate on one or more studio areas (Painting & Drawing, Sculpture, Printmaking or Photography). Please see the course sequences for both degrees for suggested 4-year plans.
Before experiencing “lab teaching” in local schools, you will be challenged to research, write, plan, reflect, and to consider teaching as an extension of your own creative thought process. Processing from lab teaching to full-time student teaching, you will be mentored by the best teachers in the field.
It is not just a job – it is a calling. As an Art Education graduate and certified teacher you will communicate the powerful and unique role that art plays in the world and in the future lives of the students.
The Art Education department is unique in that it offers a student a path that does not detract from creating art. I feel that it is important to balance studio art and education.Jennifer Culkin, BS Art Education 2009
