Is anyone else completely blown away that fall is almost here? The days are getting shorter, the leaves are getting crunchier, and the last hints of summer are starting to fade away. Honestly? We can’t wait. Our campus in the fall is just *chef’s kiss*, don’t you think?
As you start welcoming in the new season, we’ve rounded up everything you need to know for this week’s In the Know. It’s going to be a good one, so keep reading for all the details!
P.S. Is your club or student organization hosting an event soon? Maybe you have some important or exciting news to share with other students? Get the word out! Email your In the Know submissions to Sarah at heikkins@strose.edu by Friday to get featured in the next edition.
What’s New and Next
Calling all designers, fashion icons, and anybody handy with a pencil: The senior class t-shirt design contest is underway, and our soon-to-be graduates are in need of a super cool design for their class shirt! Submissions must be in by Saturday, September 25. All years are able to enter and have a chance to win. Submit your winning design today!
Parents and Family Weekend is coming up! Get ready to show your families your home away from home this weekend! We have an awesome list of fun things you and your families can do while they’re visiting on Saturday so you can have time to explore the city together Sunday. Students can have two guests each. All guests will need to fill out the College’s visitor health questionnaire (they should select Student Life as the office they are visiting), and we ask guests to not come to campus if they have any symptoms. Unfortunately, outside guests are not permitted in the residence halls under the current COVID-19-related policies.
Looking for a job or internship? Sign up for one of the Career Center’s Lunch and Learn Virtual Employer Sessions! This is a great opportunity to connect with local AND non-local recruiters, learn about the hiring process, and, most important, get hired. This week, you can meet with folks from Touching Hearts at Home and the Capital District YMCA – scroll down to the calendar section for more details! You’ll find a full schedule of employers (with Zoom links!) on the HireStrose website.
Cleaning out your closet? Why not donate your gently used clothes (or maybe even that shirt you bought but just haven’t gotten around to wearing yet) to our clothing drive for Things of My Very Own? Our Community Service team is looking for socks, coats, sweaters, gloves, shirts, and pants in youth sizes 12-20. Donations will be accepted in the EAC and the Sanctuary through October 15.
We need school supplies! SEED Methods classes are collecting school supplies for Albany City elementary schools. The Education Department is looking for paper towels, pencils, two-pocket plastic folders, notebooks, dry erase markers, crayons, one-inch binders, Clorox wipes, and hard plastic pencil cases. Keep an eye out for collection boxes around campus – donations will be accepted until September 24!
Stronger WiFi is just around the corner: Our incredible ITS team has been working hard to replace the College’s wireless network, but a worldwide computer chip shortage has held them up from finishing their work. But don’t worry! We’ll have better, faster, and more consistently strong WiFi across the campus by the spring semester.
Reminders
Show love, stay masked: This is your weekly reminder that you need to mask 👏 up 👏 when you’re inside all College buildings, regardless of your vaccination status. Please make sure your mask is completely covering your mouth and nose – they’re not doing a whole lot if they’re under your chin! Stay up-to-date with the COVID-19 Dashboard. Oh, and here’s another handy (and informative!) picture to demonstrate proper mask wearing:
Know the rules: Heads up that the new Student Handbook is up on the website. Let it be your guide if you ever need a helping hand!
Get in the swing of things! The Women’s Golf Team has an open roster spot currently and we are looking for someone who has a golfing background to join us for the upcoming fall season. This is a great opportunity to improve your game, be part of a team, and play beautiful courses! Interested? Please contact Matt McPhillips (mcphillm@strose.edu) for further details as soon as possible.
The EAC pool is open! To keep everyone safe, we’re requiring that any students who want to come to open swim hours sign up ahead of time. You can sign up to swim here. Before you do, make sure you read through the re-opening guidelines.
Apply for Intercultural Pathways! Intercultural Pathways is a student development program for first-year students, brought to you by the ALANA is Leadership Mentorship and Ambassadors of Inclusion Programs. See Dr. Galen Gomes in the Student Development Suite in the EAC for further information or to apply. Learn more about Intercultural Pathways here.
SEFCU is officially on campus: You can’t miss it – SEFCU’s mobile branch will be parked outside the EAC every Monday and Wednesday. The mobile branch is equipped with an ATM for cash withdrawals, teller stations, loan stations, and so much more! Learn more about the services they’re offering here.
IMPORTANT – Don’t forget to complete your required online prevention education courses: At Saint Rose, we believe in the importance of creating a safe and healthy environment. The College has a responsibility per federal and state regulations to provide each student with education and awareness training in the areas of sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence, and stalking. We have partnered with EVERFI to provide trainings that will help us all be informed on topics vital to achieving our goal. As part of our comprehensive prevention program all new/incoming students are required to complete the following online trainings: Sexual Assault Prevention and AlcoholEdu (for new undergraduate students) and Sexual Assault Prevention (for new graduate students). This online education will empower students to make well-informed decisions about issues that affect their years at Saint Rose and beyond.
New/incoming students should have received an email in their Saint Rose account with the subject: The College of Saint Rose automated-message@everfi-foundry.net. Please do not delete this message because it contains the link to begin your assignment(s). Please contact Amanda Bastiani at bastiana@strose.edu if you have not received the email to start these prevention courses online.
Thank you for your ongoing support in helping to make our campus community safe! If you have any questions, or you are looking for ways to get involved, please contact Amanda Bastiani, Title IX Coordinator and Director of Prevention Education and Response, at bastiana@strose.edu. Follow @saintroselovebetter on Instagram for 24/7 access to information and resources. Find more information regarding our policies, reporting options, and resources here.

We’re sure you’ve spent some time getting to know your professors, but have you thought about learning more about the staff that keeps the College’s wheels turning every day, too? “Get to Know Saint Rose” is a weekly Q&A with a different Saint Rose staff member to help you learn more about the resources available to you while you’re here.
Meet Emily Nicholson from the Career Center!
Fast Facts:
Name: Emily Nicholson
What she does: Assistant Director
Where she works: Career Center
How long she’s been at Saint Rose: Two-and-a-half years in her current role, four years total (as a graduate student/graduate assistant)
Her alma mater: SUNY Cortland (undergraduate); Saint Rose (graduate)
Fun fact: Emily loves country music! 🤠
Get to know Emily:
What’s your favorite part of your job?
Knowing I am helping students and alumni achieve their career goals! Career planning takes a lot of effort, but when you break it down step by step and understand the process, it becomes a lot easier.
What’s something you want students to know about you?
I am a career changer! I have my undergraduate degree in speech and hearing science from SUNY Cortland and was envisioning working as a Speech-Language Pathologist. However, after I wasn’t completely happy, I realized I wanted to pursue a career in higher education because of my on-campus involvement. It is true: Passion = loving your job, and your experiences truly shape you.
If you could give students one piece of advice to carry them through their time here, what would it be?
Take risks. This is hard for some, but it is necessary for personal growth. One of my core beliefs is every student has the potential to succeed; it is just a matter of unlocking that potential. You are here at Saint Rose because WE believe in you, now it’s time to believe in yourself and what you have to offer the world!
Thanks, Emily!

Neil Hellman Library COVID protocols explained: Thanks to the many students who are following the library’s COVID rules. They’re happy to see you all using the library! However, they wanted to give you a quick refresher on their COVID protocols:
- No moving of furniture/chairs to sit together – they are configured to be three feet apart.
- Wear a mask at all times – make sure it’s covering your nose AND mouth!
- No food, but drinks with covered tops are OK – take a sip, then put your mask back on.
Let’s all do our part to keep everyone on campus healthy!
Speaking of the library, did you know they have 60 computers (both Macs and PCs) that you can use? If you’re a laptop person, you can borrow one at the circulation desk to use while in the library (first come, first served). Need printing? The library has four printers (two with color printing) that are also copiers, scanners, and fax machines. Check out the library website for hours and online content.
Woohoo!
Our athletes are #goldblooded! Congrats to the women’s soccer team for moving to No. 3 in Division II last week. They moved to a 4-0 record after their match against Felician University this weekend. We’re so proud of all of you! 💛 There will be lots of soccer to see this Saturday, September 25, at our Christian Plumeri Sports Complex. The women play at 2 p.m., followed by the men’s team at 5 p.m. Be sure to be there and make some noise!

Help us stop the spread! We’re going to keep saying it every week, but the only way we’ll get through this next wave of the pandemic is by working together! Keep yourself and your friends safe by properly wearing your masks inside (we’re talking mouth AND nose covered, people), limiting contact with people outside of your bubble, and checking the restart website for updates.
Introducing Saint Rose’s Chest Binder Program: Saint Rose students who identify as trans and/or nonbinary are eligible to get one FREE chest binder from the Counseling Center every semester. For more info, call our counselors at 518.454.5200, or send them an email at counseling@strose.edu.
