The Dalai Lama said, “Share your knowledge. It is a way to achieve immortality.” Well, In the Know is going to live forever because we’ve got so much knowledge to share.

What’s cooking for In the Know this week? Another fantastic panel discussion on tap Wednesday for Black History Month, some special events in the dining hall, and a notice to be on the lookout for an important survey on campus climate. But those are just the highlights. Read on for the graduate open house information, community service opportunities, and so much more.

Learn about where community activism is headed: Celebrate Black History Month with a packed schedule of events, including a weekly meditation via Zoom and important talks and panel discussions. Up this week is “Community Activism: Where Do We Go from Here” on Wednesday, February 17, at 5 p.m. The talk will feature Richard Harris of 100 Black Men, Dr. Odo Butler of the NAACP, the Rev. Michael Aaron Poindexter from the faith community, and Malik James of The New York Immigration Coalition. The panel will be moderated by our own Dr. Galen Gomes, director of diversity and inclusion. Get the Zoom link for the panel here (Meeting ID: 91320626654 Passcode: WTGC). You can get the full calendar of events for Black History Month at Saint Rose, which is themed “When the Glory Comes” on the diversity and inclusion website.

Help make our College a more inclusive environment:The College of Saint Rose is partnering with the Higher Education Data Sharing Consortium (HEDS) to issue a College-wide survey that aims to better understand how students, faculty, staff, and administrators perceive Saint Rose’s climate and level of support for diversity and equity. We would also like to know whether and how often campus members have experienced bias discrimination or harassment. The survey will launch on February 22 with a survey link, which we will make available in a follow-up email, on our website, and via a QR code. The College encourages all community members to participate. Responses will remain completely anonymous. If you have any questions in advance of the survey, please email institutionalresearch@strose.edu.

Help with substance abuse: The Counseling and Psychological Services Center says that with the pandemic, substance abuse is on the rise. Are you struggling but not sure if you’ve crossed the line when it comes to using substances like drugs or alcohol? Check out this guide from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. This flier from the Counseling and Psychological Services Center also explains signs of substance abuse and how to reach out to them help.

Advice for helping youth with mental health in the pandemic (it applies to us, too): The Thelma P. Lally School of Education hosted a panel discussion called “Supporting Youth Mental Health in Challenging Times” on February 11 that featured Saint Rose faculty, alumni, and friends of the College who all work in the education or mental health fields. If you missed it, the presenters recorded it, so be sure to give it a look, and send the link to anyone in your circle who works with children and youth. You’ll hear a lot of good advice that can be applied to adults, too.

Work it out! The Fitness Center in the Events and Athletics Center (EAC) is open, with 45-minute slots available through advance sign-up. Hours are: Monday from 10 a.m. to noon; 1 to 3 p.m. and 4 to 9 p.m.; Tuesday and Thursday from 9 to 10 a.m., 11 a.m. to noon, and 2 to 9 p.m.; Wednesday from 10 to 11 a.m. and 2 to 9 p.m.; Friday from 2 to 9 p.m.; and Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Masks must be worn at all times when using the facility and social distancing must be maintained.

Snow could be on its way this week, so here’s a reminder about cancelations and delays: During the last weather-related closing, there was some not-surprising confusion around what it meant for courses that are being delivered remotely during the pandemic. To clarify, Dr. Margaret McLane, interim provost and vice president for academic affairs, sent an email to students recently clarifying what happens in the event of closings and delays.

Opportunities to serve the dear neighbor: When times are tough, it often helps us to help others. Check out these upcoming community service activities, or email communityservice@strose.edu with questions.

    That COVID-19 pandemic life

    via GIPHY

What are our numbers? COVID-19 rates for the College are updated on the COVID-19 Dashboard as we learn of new cases.

A test you don’t have to study for: As stated by Mark Parisi, director of counseling and health services, in his weekly COVID-19 update on Friday, we are increasing our weekly sample testing efforts. Starting next week, we will randomly select 10% of our on-campus population (both undergraduate and graduate students and employees) for testing each week. This is an increase from last semester, when we tested 1 to 2% of our student population on campus weekly. The testing will be conducted using a non-invasive technique involving a saliva sample. You do not need to contact Health Services for this. They will reach out to those who have been randomly selected via email. If you are having COVID-19 testing done, be sure to not drink or eat anything a half hour before your testing appointment.

What happens if you have to quarantine? In the event you test positive for COVID-19 or come in contact with someone at the College who has, you will get a call from our contact tracers and be asked to quarantine. If you live on-campus and choose to quarantine here, see what the process is like on the restart website.

Common spaces: A quick reminder that residential students have the ability to use common areas in their residence halls. Information about protocols for using those spaces can be found under the Housing and Dining section of the restart website..

COVID-19 testing: We are requiring all undergraduate and graduate students who plan to come to campus for any reason this semester to submit a negative COVID-19 test result to covidresults@strose.edu before they come to campus. Results were due January 29, but if you didn’t submit yours, make sure you either do so or fill out a testing waiver (which promises you won’t be coming to campus for any reason this semester). If you did not submit test results or a waiver your ID card will not get you access into campus buildings. Why does all this testing matter? We caught about 30 positive cases before they landed on campus. Side note: College employees are being tested before returning to campus, too.

Remember the rules: The Office of Student Conduct has updated College policies to include COVID-19-related matters. No one wants to be a downer, but we have to keep you, other students, employees of the College, and the surrounding community safe. The end goal is defeating the COVID-19 pandemic so we can return to the lives we knew.
You can read all the details about the policy on the restart website, but here are the basics:
Wear a mask that covers your nose and mouth whenever you’re on campus (with a few exceptions).
Students are expected to not host or participate in gatherings where social distancing and/or mask-wearing cannot or does not occur either on or off-campus.
Policy violations could result in removal or termination of housing, and you may be dismissed from the College. Tuition and room and board refunds will not be given under these circumstances.

Zoom security: Zoombombing is when unwanted users join Zoom meetings to try and take over the session in order to share material that is lewd or heinous in nature. Online Learning Services has provided tips for securing your meetings.

WiFi woes? This just in from ITS:Users who have an iPhone, iPad, or Apple Watch and use the wireless network on campus will have some trouble due to some new features that came with the release in September of Apple’s new OS’s, IOS 14, iPadOS 14 and watchOS7. One of the new features they added was a privacy feature when connecting to an SSID – those are the Strose, Strose-Secure, and any of the other connections you see when connecting to wireless. Having the privacy feature turned on changes your WiFi address every time you connect to that SSID. This will cause you to have to constantly re-register your device on the network and after seven times, will no longer allow you to connect. To prevent this from happening, you will have to make a change to the SSID by turning off the private address option. Disconnecting will auto connect using your original address. How do you do this? Follow these steps before trying to get onto the network. If you have trouble making this change, open up a Help Desk ticket.

Training for new and incoming students Saint Rose believes in the importance of creating a safe and healthy environment for all of our community members. The College has a responsibility per federal and state regulations to provide each student with education and awareness training in the areas of sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence, and stalking. We have partnered with EVERFI to provide trainings that will help us all be informed on topics vital to achieving our goal. To that end, and as part of our comprehensive prevention program for all new/incoming students, the College expects students to complete “Sexual Assault Prevention” and “AlcoholEdu” (new undergraduates) or “Sexual Assault Prevention” (new graduate students). This online education will empower students to make well-informed decisions about issues that affect their years at Saint Rose and beyond. New/incoming students should receive an email in their Saint Rose account with the subject: The College of Saint Rose automated-message@everfi-foundry.net; Please do not delete this message from your College email. The link to begin your assignment(s) is included in the email. If you have any questions regarding this required training, please contact Amanda Bastiani, Title IX coordinator and director of prevention education and response, at bastiana@strose.edu.

Study stops are back: If you’re commuting to campus and need a place to take a class or study between on-campus classes, we’ve once again designated rooms throughout campus as Study Stops. Just be sure to follow social distancing measures and use headphones if you’re taking a class.

Lima Computer Lab sign-ups: Want to use the Lima Computer Lab? You’ve got to sign up online first. Up to 10 students can sign up to be in the lab at a time, and spots are available in two-hour blocks. Students should have submitted a negative COVID-19 test result to the College at the beginning of the semester before using the lab. Students are asked to wipe down the equipment before and after they use it. Supplies are provided.

Tap into online learning resources Online Learning Services has a host of resources, including video, to help you with remote learning. Please take a look at those resources on the website.

The Navigate app should be your new best friend. The College implemented this tool in order to help students stay on track to graduation and provide access to resources, including appointment scheduling with professors and College offices, literally at their fingertips. If you were struggling in a course last semester, you would have received alerts along the way with suggested interventions. Also, students are required to have the app in order to complete their Daily Health Survey as part of our COVID-19 prevention practices. If you do not have Navigate yet, please download it at www.strose.edu/navigate. If you’re having trouble, please email navigate@strose.edu.
