The College of Saint Rose recently launched two new master’s degree programs – Computer Science and Information Technology – and is enrolling students for the Fall 2018 semester.

The Computer Science degree is for graduate students with strong analytical and conceptual skills, who are interested in coding and aspire to build software solutions. The Information Technology degree focuses on applying technological solutions to achieve business objectives.

These new programs mark eight new degree programs announced at Saint Rose since last spring, in addition to a new certificate program. Last year, Saint Rose launched new master’s degree programs in Business Analytics and Social Work; accelerated dual-degrees that allow students to earn both a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in Psychology/Clinical Mental Health Counseling or Psychology/Business Administration; and bachelor’s degrees in Inclusive Early Childhood Education and Music Performance. Also new to the College is a Certificate of Translation Spanish <> English, an 18-credit program.

Every so often, a high-level executive speaks to a Saint Rose Computer Science class after responding to a rather significant cyberattack.

“These are top cybersecurity folks from financial institutions such as Citizens, or Verizon, or government,” noted Dr. Ian MacDonald, a Computer Science professor and the College’s Interim Dean of Mathematics and Sciences. “They give students an hour of their time every week. In an hour, they have big impact.”

The class, “Insider Threat,” invites industry experts to talk to students, via video conference, about the causes of large scale computer breaches and how they handle them.

The College of Saint Rose Board of Trustees has elected James J. Barba and Sharon M. Duker G’15 as new members of the Board.

Barba has led Albany Medical Center, the only academic health sciences center in northeastern New York and the largest locally governed health care system in 25 counties, as its president and chief executive officer since 1995.

Duker received her Master of Science in Education from The College of Saint Rose in 2015. Duker and her family are known for their philanthropic work, and she has served on numerous boards, including Albany Medical Center and the Doane Stuart School, where she is currently President of the Board.

2000s and beyond

Dr. Megan Rockafellow-Baldoni ’09, a researcher at Rutgers School of Public Health, published research showing that the use of arsenic-treatment systems reduces the risk of cancer in people in Hopewell Township, New Jersey. The research, which Rockafellow-Baldoni coauthored with other Rutgers researchers, showed that treatment systems for well water can significantly lower the incidence of cancer and cancer-related deaths.

Ginny Casey ’03 held a solo exhibition, “Built from Broke,” at the Nino Mier Gallery in Los Angeles from June 10 through July 14 of last year. The gallery description reads: “Casey depicts tools of a ceramicist as well as isolated domestic objects in an intimate proximity. The unsettling dissonance in scale and perspective animates her objects and lets them fall, float, and rest in a state of tension and interrelation.”

1970s

Kathleen Ellis Powers ’71 has published “How to Write A Fifth Grade (or Any Other Grade) Essay,” a book directed at third- through middle-grade students. Powers also writes two blogs: one on writing and the other on teaching beginning readers.
 

1950s

With sadness, we note the passing of Margaret A. “Peggy Ann” Ryan ’52. on February 10, 2018. She earned a BS in Business Administration/Economics, and first taught school at Dexter (later General Brown Central School), then at her alma mater, Watertown High School, from 1966 until her retirement in 1989.
