2000 and Beyond:

Kamilla Castillo ’17 (BS, Accounting) is a staff auditor at the Office of the Comptroller in New York City in the Financial Audit division. She is also working towards completing her CPA Exam license.

Caroline Murray ’13 (BA, Communications) began a new position as undergraduate admissions communications specialist for The College of Saint Rose, where she has also been working as marketing and communications coordinator since September 2017.

Schuyler Bull ’10 (BS/MBA, Business Administration), Jordan Glindmyer ’09 (BS, Criminal Justice, Behavior, and Law), and Dan Cancelliere G’05 (MBA, Business Administration), were named to Albany Business Review’s “40 under 40” awards for 2018.

David J Quesnell ’08 (BS Mathematics/Adolescence Education, G’10 MS Ed. Curriculum and Instruction), currently a math teacher at Immaculate High School in Danbury, Conn., is engaged to Kathryn Capellaro. The couple has planned their wedding for October 2018, according to the Danbury News Times.

Shaundra Bartlett Lerman ’04 (BA, Public Communication) is writing her third children’s book, and was scheduled to be interviewed on March 24 on WNYT News Channel 13 with Dan Bazile, to discuss her career and the world of Bartlettberry Briar, the setting for her books.

Jonathan Baker ’03 (BS, Elementary Education: Pre-K-6) has been named principal of Hadley-Luzerne Elementary School, where he will begin in the fall. Currently an assistant principal at Queensbury High School, Baker has served in the administration there for three years after teaching sixth grade for 11 years.

1990s:

Mary Mattes ’97 (BA, Biology) has become senior vice president for biometrics and drug safety at Synteract, where she will define, develop, and ensure quality delivery of data management, biostatistics, medical writing, and safety services globally across Phase I-IV trials for clients and help select and implement technology enhancements to continue to advance the company. Mattes previously held senior level roles in biometrics and data management at Accelovance and PRA.

1980s:

Joe Milazzo G’85 (MS, Special Education) has become vice president of the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League. Currently the baseball coach at Utica College, Milazzo guided the team to its first 20-win season in more than 20 years. Prior to that, he served as head coach at the junior college level at Herkimer County Community College and Mohawk Valley Community College. He also worked for three decades as a special-education teacher at Whitesboro High School and was athletic director at Notre Dame High School.

In memoriam

1990s:

Vicki Hartman Moorhead ’94 (BA, Public Communication) passed away unexpectedly at the age of 46 in her home in Middleburgh, on February 20, 2018. Vicki graduated from Middleburgh Central School in 1989.  She worked as an assignment editor for WNYT and recently as a baker at Schoharie Valley Farms, often being recognized for her work ethic and attention to detail. Her true passion, though, was being a stay-at-home mom to her daughter, Ashley, for 11 years. Having lived with OCD, Vicki proudly authored her own book “The Raw Truth” to educate others about this illness.

Julie DeMarco ’93 (BS, Communication Sciences and Disorders) passed away at age 48 on February 20, 2018, at High Point Hospice House, Andover, Massachusetts, after a courageous battle with a rare cancer. Julie graduated from Heatly School in Green Island, The College of Saint Rose, and Boston University. She was a long time special-education teacher in the North Andover public school system where she was passionately devoted to her students and constantly thrived on continuing her own education to best serve them.

Robert A. Nolan ’90 (BS, Interdepartmental Studies) passed away peacefully at his home in Ballston Spa on Saturday, March 17, 2018. He was a designer for General Electric Co. in Schenectady for 38 years, retiring in 2005. Bob’s passion was photography. He enjoyed having cocktails, while relaxing in the hot tub with his family and friends.

1970s:

Joyce Grenon ’79 (BS Childhood Education/Special Education) passed away in Red Hook on March 13, 2018. She wrote her own obituary, an excerpt of which reads: I have never been one who boasts of her accomplishments, but I admit to being proud that I was the first in my family to go to college. It was a proud day also for my mom and dad when I received my master’s degree in Special Education. I hold degrees from The College of Saint Rose and LIU. I spent 30 fulfilling years teaching special ed, both in public and private schools, including Randolph School in Wappinger’s and BOCES satellite schools in Hyde Park and Arlington.

Donald Lloyd McMann ’78 (BS, Interdepartmental Studies) passed away on March 2, 2018, in Lakeland, Florida, after a long battle with ALS. Born in Ballston Spa, New York, Don was best known for his love of the outdoors. He traveled extensively throughout the world. He loved flying, boating, boat building and most recently his beautiful yard and gardens. He was passionate about God, the Bible and his Friday night Bible study. Even in his infirmity he spent many happy hours studying and sharing his knowledge with others. He started piloting airplanes at the age of 14. He worked at General Electric for 25 years, he worked as a private consultant for 16 years and dabbled in real estate. He even owned his own company building electric boats.

Sister Toni Ann Murphy, CSJ, ’74, G’83 (BS, Early Childhood Education, Social Studies, MS Ed. Special Education) passed away at the age of 74 on February 25, 2018, at St. Joseph’s Provincial House, Latham. She had been a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet for the past 47 years. After graduating from the Academy of the Holy Names, Albany, and before she entered the Sisters of St. Joseph, she worked for the New York Telephone Company and subsequently taught at St. Ann’s School and Cathedral Academy, in Albany, and St. Francis School in Troy. On August 4, 1971, Sister Toni entered the novitiate of the Sisters of St. Joseph and professed final vows on August 6, 1979. For 32 years, Sister Toni taught in schools of the Albany and Syracuse Dioceses. After her retirement from teaching, she volunteered at St. Joseph’s Provincial House as receptionist and as computer instructor to the Senior Sisters.

John Leo, Jr. ’74 (BS, Accounting and Business Administration) passed away unexpectedly at St. Joe’s Hospital on February 22, 2018. He was a Boy Scout, altar boy, baseball player, and a confirmed Catholic. John was a graduate of St. Anthony of Padua High School (1966) in Syracuse; he served in the U.S. Air Force Reserves with the 108th Tactical Control Squadron from 1967 until 1973. He retired as assistant commissioner of the Onondaga County Transportation Department in 2008.

1960s:

Sister Patricia (Miriam Clare) Poulin, CSJ, ’68 (BS, Business Education) passed away on March 10, 2018, at age 94, at St. Joseph’s Provincial House, Latham. She had been a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet for the past 69 years. After graduating from St. Mary’s Institute, Amsterdam, she worked for several years at Mohawk Carpet Mills/Mohasco Industries in Amsterdam. On March 19, 1949, Sister Patricia entered the novitiate of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Troy, New York, and professed final vows on August 15, 1956. She received a bachelor’s degree in Business Education from The College of Saint Rose, a master’s degree in Education from the University at Albany, and a doctor of ministry degree in Pastoral Counseling from the Graduate Theological Foundation. For 30 years, Sister Patricia taught in schools of the Albany Diocese, including 12 years at Catholic Central High School, Troy. Subsequently, she was supervisor of Clinical Pastoral Education at Lourdes Hospital, Binghamton. Previous to her retirement, Sister Patricia was a pastoral counselor in both Binghamton and Cincinnatus, New York. 

Mary Anne Heffernan-Law ’67 (BA, English) passed away on February 21, 2018. Beloved wife, guide, teacher, and friend of William V. Law, she is remembered with love by all those whose lives she touched. She survived 30 years on kidney dialysis and became an expert on this process, helping other patients and was involved with their rights and welfare. She was an English teacher in the Albany area, retiring from Albany High School. She was the first woman radio announcer on a beautiful music station, WHSH, and then went on to work at WKLI.

Sister Edward Marie (Marion Elizabeth) Seubert OSF ’64 (BS, Business Economics) passed away at the age of 93 on March 1, 2018, at the Franciscan Villa in Syracuse, New York. Born in Utica, New York, to Edward John and Dorothy Mary (Achen) Seubert, she had been a Sister of St. Francis for 72 years. She earned a Master’s in Business Education from Catholic University of America. Sister taught in schools in Syracuse, Utica, Amsterdam, Albany and Oswego, New York, as well as Riverside and New Brunswick, New Jersey. Her early teaching experience spanned first through seventh grades, all four years of high school and instruction at Maria Regina College in Syracuse, New York. Sister served as principal of an elementary school in Fulton, New York. In 1978, she was asked to serve as Treasurer of Maria Regina College, a post she held until the College surrendered its charter in 1989.

1950s:

Dr. Kyung Sook Molly Lee ’59 (BS, Business/Economics) passed away at age 83. Beloved wife of the late Dr. Chung Sik Lee, devoted mother of Margaret MacLeod (Scott) and cherished grandmother of Jessica and Sean, she was named “Unsinkable Molly” by her Saint Rose classmates. A pioneer in the 1950s, Lee received a scholarship to journey from Korea to attend college in the U.S. She also earned her MA and Ph.D in Economics from New York University. She went on to teach Economics at the New York University of Technology, becoming Chairman of the Department of Social Sciences, and the Dean of the Division of Humanities.

Helen Madden Maloney ’51 (BS, Business) passed away at the age of 89 in her home in Loudonville surrounded by her loving family on March 9, 2018. She was very proud to have worked at the FBI and as a third-grade teacher at Miller Hill School in Averill Park before she married. After having her four children, she began a career in real estate that spanned almost 20 years working with Roberts Real Estate.
 
Lillian Boudreau Dutcher Bosley ’50 (BS, Business Education) passed away at her home on March 5, 2018, at the age of 90. She received a master’s degree from the University at Albany. She was the Saint Rose Reunion (now HOME.Coming) chair/class agent in 2000. Lillian taught business education at the former Linton High School for many years.

Friends and faculty, in memoriam

Dr. James (Jim) P. Burns, Professor Emeritus of Special Education, passed away at his home in East Greenbush on March 8, 2018, after a long illness. Jim retired this past June after a 36-year career at the College teaching generations of educators—with a smile, with stories, and with the highest of standards. His gentle, yet unwavering passion and commitment to cultivating the best, most expert teachers will impact classrooms across the country for years to come. His late wife Kathleen Burns ’87 was an alumna; the couple’s children, Jaime Burns and Matthew Burns worked on campus prior to 1997.

Sister Agnes Rose Burton ’51, CSJ, passed away on March 6, 2018, at St. Joseph’s Provincial House in Latham. Sister Agnes served for over three decades at The College of Saint Rose, and for many of those years lived on campus with Sister Tess Wysolmerski. Their house on Partridge Street was the site of many memorable gatherings of colleagues and friends. Read more about her passing here.

Roger Hannay, a friend of the College of Saint Rose, spouse of Sherley Hannay G’98 (MA, Music), and father of Dawn Bub ’88 (BS, Elementary Education: Pre-K-6), passed away on February 26, 2018, at age 75. He was chairman and former CEO of Hannay Reels, which supported Saint Rose throughout the years. Hannay was CEO of the Westerlo, New York, manufacturer from 1990 to 2012. He was the third generation to work for Hannay Reels and was at the company for more than 50 years. He attended Wheaton College for his undergraduate degree and obtained an MBA from the University of Michigan. He served as an Army lieutenant in Vietnam before going to work at Hannay Reels.
Hannay was on The Business Council’s Board of Directors for many years and received its Corning Award for Excellence in 2014. Hannay is survived by his wife of 54 years, Sherley, four children, three sisters, a brother and several grandchildren.

Saint Rose lost a significant and familiar part of its community last month.

Sister Agnes Rose Burton, CSJ, passed away on March 6, 2018, at St. Joseph’s Provincial House in Latham. Sister Agnes served for over three decades at The College of Saint Rose, and for many of those years lived on campus with Sister Tess Wysolmerski. Their house on Partridge Street was the site of many memorable gatherings of colleagues and friends.

Sister Agnes came to The College of Saint Rose in 1947 to obtain a degree in English, with a minor in History. While she attended Saint Rose, she was a member of many clubs and organizations, including Sodality, Shadows, the Peace Club and the Rosaverian, and she was vice president of her class all four years.  She graduated in 1951, entering the order of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Carondelet that same year.  She came back to The College of Saint Rose and obtained a Master of Arts in History in 1961, and then obtained a Master of Arts in Political Science from the State University at Albany in 1969. Upon the final profession of her vows as a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet, she took the name Sister Agnes Rose Burton. Sister Agnes taught in high schools in the Albany and Syracuse Dioceses including: St. Aloysius Academy, Rome; St. Mary’s, Hudson; St. Anthony’s, Syracuse; St. Patrick’s, Syracuse; St. Mary’s, Little Falls; Catholic Central, Binghamton; and Bishop Grimes, Syracuse.

Sister Agnes returned to The College of Saint Rose again in 1971, serving as a dedicated member of our faculty in the Department of History and Political Science for 31 years, and served as the national, state and local government internship coordinator. During her tenure at Saint Rose, Sister Agnes was a candidate for President of the Albany Common Council, having her students at the time run her political campaign; she was a ward leader in the City of Albany with a strong involvement in City politics for 20 years; she served as an Executive Committee Member for the Albany Republican Party; and she was appointed to the Albany Ethics Commission.  Over the years, she continued to be involved with her alma mater as an active member of the Alumni Association, serving on its Board of Directors for many years. In 1986, she was recognized for her dedication to her profession when she received the Thomas Manion Distinguished Faculty Award, and in 2003, she was promoted to the rank of Professor Emeritus. In 2007, Sister Agnes was presented with the Carondelet Lifetime Achievement Award for alumni.

Sister Agnes is memorialized by the Biagiotti-Burton Award, which was established by Nora Anderson in tribute to her nephew Domenico Biagiotti’s favorite professor, and is given each year to a student selected by members of the History department. She also was instrumental in setting up the Sr. Rosaleen Gilroy, CSJ History-Political Science Award, which is given each year to a senior majoring in History/Political Science with the highest grade point average.
 
Sister Agnes Rose Burton exemplified the mission of our founding Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet and of our College in serving “the dear neighbor,” encouraging and mentoring hundreds of students over the years to give back to their communities.

Saint Rose Board of Trustees member Ryan Halliday ’99 serves high- and ultra-high-net-worth individuals and families as a private wealth advisor. Now CEO and managing partner of Crewe Advisors in Salt Lake City, Halliday was anything but your typical transfer student when he came to Saint Rose in the mid 1990s. Not only was he moving across the country – from Utah to New York – but he had served a mission for the Mormon Church and was married.

What he found at Saint Rose was a seamless transition to a new home. “We had an instant family and a support system,” said Halliday. “This allowed me to build academic foundation to be successful in a career, as well as the relationships and connections that allowed me to get into this industry and this career.”
