Consider summer courses at Saint Rose: If you’re falling behind or want to get ahead, consider picking up a summer course or two at Saint Rose. Most offerings are online, and there’s a discount on summer undergraduate courses. You can see what’s being offered and read about why you may want to take a summer course on the website.

In-person (socially distanced) outdoor yoga is back! Free outdoor yoga classes start again this Monday, April 19, at 7 p.m. outside the Interfaith Sanctuary. Just bring a mask and a mat! Be sure to pre-register for yoga at this link.

Free food! Drop by the dining hall on Saturday, April 24, and get a free dinner courtesy of Student Association and Sodexo. All undergraduate and graduate students are eligible to participate – you don’t have to have a meal plan. Just pick up a ticket from Student Association at the dining hall entrance in order to claim your free dinner. If you already have a meal plan, it won’t count against your swipes.

Spring Fever and Rose Rock: The week! This week is jammed with fun events to celebrate Spring Fever and Rose Rock. While Rose Rock will look different since a giant one-day concert on the lawn is too much of an invitation for COVID, student organizers have found creative ways to celebrate safely and rock on. Check out the calendar below for the line-up.

New guidelines for indoor gatherings of 40 or more: As you learned in the weekly COVID-19 update on Friday, the College will have a new process called EventClear for indoor gatherings of 40 or more starting April 24. Short version: Starting April 24, indoor events that will host 40 or more attendees must show either:

• Proof of a completed vaccine series with the last dose occurring more than 14 days prior to the event
OR
• Results of a negative COVID test taken 72 hours prior to the event if it’s a PCR test or 6 hours prior to the event if it’s a Rapid Test

If you are planning to provide proof of vaccination (your vaccine card) or off-campus test results, that documentation must be emailed to eventclear@strose.edu no later than 4 p.m. on the day of the event. If you sign up for on-campus testing in preparation for the event, it is taken care of for you. Important notes: Most outdoor events and smaller indoor events will not have to follow this procedure. We will support this new process by offering free testing on campus at scheduled times, but you have to be sure to sign up for it.

Read more details about testing availability and event details on the Student Development area of the website.

Attention all School of Arts & Humanities students (and alumni): A panel discussion called, “From College to Career: Arts and Humanities Industry Experts,” will be held Tuesday, April 20, at 5 p.m. via Zoom. In this panel discussion, industry experts will share their professional journeys in their various career fields – from broadcast news and public affairs to community engagement and creative services. Read more about the panel in this story.

Check out the Vickery Lecture this week: Dr. Naomi Zack, a professor of philosophy at Lehman College, CUNY and author of the newly released “The American Tragedy of COVID-19: Social and Political Crises of 2020,” will discuss marginalization and inequity during the COVID-19 pandemic as she delivers the Vickery Lecture in Ethics and Leadership online on April 23 at 3:30 p.m. The lecture, titled “Inequality and Marginalization During COVID-19: Race, Ethnicity, Gender, and Age” is hosted by The College of Saint Rose and will be delivered via Zoom. The 90-minute event, which will include Q&A with the audience, is free and open to the public. Register online to receive the Zoom link for the lecture.

“COVID-19 has been a tragedy in the United States, in the ordinary meaning of a bad, sad, and unwanted sequences of events,” Zack writes in “The American Tragedy of COVID-19: Social and Political Crises of 2020″ (Rowman & Littlefield, March 2021). “COVID-19 in the United States is also a classic tragedy according to Aristotle’s definition, whereby protagonists are responsible for the bad, sad, and unwanted events that befall them. The strongest lesson learned from COVID-19 is that this pandemic has revealed where we, collectively, were already vulnerable and short of virtue. Preexisting physical debilities are newly revealed, social inequities freshly matter, and good and bad character and values are on full display. Injustice becomes evident to many more besides its victims.”

Interested in an MBA? We’ll hold a roundtable with MBA faculty, current Flex MBA students, and the Graduate Admissions team via Zoom on Thursday, April 22, at 5 p.m..

Please take The Healthy Minds Study: We know you take a lot of surveys, but it’s because we want to be able to serve you better. The Healthy Minds Study (HMS) is a national online survey assessing student mental health and service utilization on college campuses. The confidential information provided from this study reflects students’ day-to-day experiences on campus and provides insight into both your struggles and successes. This knowledge will be used to inform policy, practice, programs and services on campus, thus bettering student life. All students will be receiving emails with information on how to participate in this study, including access to the link for the survey! The survey will be available to students through May 7.

But wait! There’s an incentive: Participating in this study will make you eligible for one of four $10 Starbucks gift cards donated by Sodexo. After completing the survey, students also will be entered into a national sweepstakes for one of 10 $100 prizes and one of two $500 prizes.

And speaking of surveys, hey seniors! Seniors received a survey link in their email last week, and we want to hear about their Saint Rose experience. Those who participate will be entered into raffles to win over $600 worth of prizes and Saint Rose swag.

Ask a Golden Knight Guide: The Golden Knight Guide program is a mentorship program to support first-year students. During “Ask a Golden Knight Guide,” students can jump on a Zoom session from 2 to 3 p.m. on Tuesdays, and the Zoom will be staffed by Student Development mentors who can offer guidance, help students explore College resources, and offer a chance for students to meet other students with the same questions.

Volunteer opportunity: Do you have a few hours to volunteer between now and August? Dr. Julienne Cuccio Slichko, assistant professor of literacy and special education, is looking for volunteers to help promote, organize, and work on The RIDE 4 Autism. Proceeds of this event are going to the Friday Knights program at Saint Rose for kids on the autism spectrum. The motorcycle ride/BBQ fundraiser takes place on Saturday, August 21. You don’t have to ride a motorcycle to participate, and you do not have to attend the event to volunteer. To volunteer, you can sign up online. Email Dr. Slichko at slichkoj@strose.edu if you have questions. Why help? Last year, the ride raised $4,000 for Friday Knights.

Remembering those we’ve lost: The Office of Spiritual Life recognizes that many people in our community may have lost loved ones this year. A Wall of Remembering has been created in the Interfaith Sanctuary, and students are invited to add the names of those they’ve lost to the wall as a way to honor them.

Academics

via GIPHY

Honors Convocation:This year we will celebrate Honors Convocation, which recognizes students who have demonstrated distinguished academic achievement, through live virtual ceremonies for each of our four schools. Those who will be recognized will have received a link in their email.
Huether School of Business: Friday, April 23, at 5:30 p.m.
School of Mathematics and Sciences: Friday, April 23, at 7 p.m.
School of Arts and Humanities: Friday, April 30, at 5:30 p.m.
Thelma P. Lally School of Education: Friday, April 30, at 7 p.m.

Online course registration is open! Students are allowed to add/drop classes on their own for each term up until the specific add/drop deadlines for each term. Please see the Academic Calendar on our website for those dates.

Too early to think about finals? Not really. It might be a little early, but planning and preparation lead to success. Take a look at the Spring 2021 Final Exam schedule posted on our website so you understand what the schedule looks like.

Course listings are out! Here’s your reminder that course listings are now available on the website. One thing to keep in mind: The goal for Fall 2021 is to have as much in-person instruction as possible, with the exception of courses/programs that were originally designed to be delivered online. Some courses have been listed as hybrid to make sure there is an in-person component given current social-distancing requirements and therefore room-capacity limits. New CDC guidance for P-12 schools suggests 3 feet of social distance is adequate to guard against the spread of COVID. If those same guidelines are recommended for higher education, it would allow more in-person opportunities for those courses currently listed as hybrid. We will keep you posted on how this evolves.

Find a buddy for when you study: Speaking of how incredible the Navigate app is, you can use it to find a study buddy for your courses. The process is simple:
• Go to Study Buddies in the Navigate menu.
• Select the classes where you want to connect with a Study Buddy.
• If another student in the class has indicated they want a Study Buddy, too, their name will appear. If no one shows up, keep checking back.
• You can email whoever has said they’re looking for a Buddy right from the app and arrange a time to meet (either masked and socially distanced in person or online).
• Follow these tips for Study Buddy success: Choose the right platform for your needs (Zoom, etc.), set an agenda, rotate and share responsibilities, and set regular meetings throughout the semester.

Study stops: If you’re commuting to campus and need a place to take a class or study between on-campus classes, we’ve once again designated rooms throughout campus as Study Stops. Just be sure to follow social distancing measures and use headphones if you’re taking a class.

Congrats to a scholarship winner! Congratulations to Cheyenne Wallace for being chosen for the Taylor P. Farnsworth Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded to a communications major and is named in honor of Farnsworth, an outstanding young communications alum who passed away in 2019.

Sales program wins award for second year: The BS in Sales Management program has been recognized for the second year in a row as a Top North American Sales School by the Sales Education Foundation (SEF). The Sales Education Foundation promotes the benefits of a sales education in both academia and the corporate world. Saint Rose was among 158 colleges and universities in the United States and 18 internationally to receive the honor.

Saint Rose is the only College in New York State to offer a sales major and minor. Since its inception, it has established a sales organization and competed in several sales competitions. Students enrolled in the program take personal selling, negotiation and conflict resolution, sales management and leadership, and retail management courses and participate in required internships.

Congratulations to Undergraduate Research Symposium presenters! The Undergraduate Research Symposium, presented last week via Zoom, featured approximately 25 posters that highlight undergraduate research at the College, presented by our student authors. Take a look at all the amazing projects on the library’s website. Or, watch the presentations by symposium presenters here (Passcode: vR%3m?t$).

Show love, vax up! Thank you to everyone in our community who received their first vaccine dose at our April 15 on-campus clinic! Saint Rose partnered with Capital Regional Pharmacy Services to organize the event and distribute 454 doses. The Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium was temporarily turned into a vaccine clinic that day and will again when the community returns for their second shot. Albany County Executive Daniel McCoy stopped by for the occasion — we thank him for all of his support during this pandemic. If you did not get your shot at our clinic, please consider checking out other vaccination options.
