The College of Saint Rose is pleased to announce that President Carolyn J. Stefanco has signed a Memorandum of Understanding establishing a relationship with the Universidad de Alcalá (UAH) in Madrid, Spain. Under the agreement, Saint Rose students will be eligible to spend a semester studying at UAH while living in the rich, multicultural environment offered by one of Europe’s greatest capital cities.

The academic program will take place at UAH’s Instituto Franklin (IF), a hub for the university’s programs in American studies and bilingual education. In addition to taking courses at IF with UAH students from all over the world, Saint Rose students will participate in a variety of cultural learning excursions throughout and beyond the region.

As part of the College’s mission to establish cross-continent collaborations in support of global learning, the agreement allows Saint Rose students to study at IF during the fall, spring, or summer academic terms. The agreement goes into effect immediately, and Saint Rose students interested in study-abroad opportunities are eligible to apply to the program for the 2020 Spring Semester.

The partnership was envisioned when Stefanco met with Jesús Valbuena Garcia ’93, a Saint Rose alum, during a visit to Madrid. Valbuena has been instrumental in assisting the College with this agreement and other international initiatives.

“We are excited about this new relationship with a respected academic partner in one of the most beautiful cultural centers of Europe,” Stefanco said. “UAH’s rigorous and relevant coursework, strong international student body, and centuries of quality academic programming make this a welcome addition to our study-abroad offerings. We are certain that this agreement will significantly enrich the Saint Rose experience for many students, and we are grateful to Jesús, a dedicated alum of Saint Rose, for facilitating this partnership.”

Established in 1987, IF is the only university institute in Spain to focus on research in North America. Founded in 1499, UAH is an undergraduate and postgraduate university serving about 29,000 international students.

The College of Saint Rose is a private, independent, coeducational institution of higher education offering more than 100 bachelor’s and master’s degree programs, and certificate programs. Through a strong liberal arts education curriculum and professional academic programs, the College serves undergraduate and graduate students, working professionals, and more. Saint Rose has a growing number of students from outside the United States, and the current student body represents 66 countries.
