Judith Enck ’81: A Career Defending the Environment Started at Saint Rose

When Kenneth Mapp, governor of the Virgin Islands, wanted help recovering from the devastation left by Hurricanes Irma and Maria, he called Judith Enck ‘81. As former administrator for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) Region 2, Enck oversaw New York, New Jersey, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands, and could offer Mapp expert advice on dealing with the water pollution and debris in the hurricanes’ wake, as well as the air pollution resulting from diesel generators.

“He called and asked me to help out after the first hurricane hit, so I traveled to the Virgin Islands for two weeks,” Enck said. “What made it challenging was there was no phone and limited Internet. So, when I got home, I kept working on hurricane issues – it’s so much easier when you have phone and Internet access!” She continues to provide recovery guidance to the devastated islands and Puerto Rico, all of which are beginning the daunting process of rebuilding their infrastructure.

National Philanthropy Day: A Day to Give and Learn

On November 15, National Philanthropy Day, Saint Rose will celebrate those in our community who make a Saint Rose education possible.

We also use this day to inform students about the vital role philanthropy plays at the College. By highlighting donor contributions, we hope to inspire a new generation of students to pursue philanthropic endeavors and find success with a well-rounded education.

A carnival, held in the Main Lounge of the Events and Athletics Center from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., will communicate the message in a fun, interactive way. Students, faculty, staff, friends, and community members are invited to attend. For more information about National Philanthropy Day, click here or watch this video.

To show students that you support them and this mission by making a gift in honor of National Philanthropy Day, please visit this page or call 518-454-5107. You can check the College’s Facebook page on November 15 for updates from the event.

A Call for Submissions: The First-Ever Saint Rose Alumni Gift Guide

Does your business have a product or service that would make a great holiday gift, or do you know another Saint Rose graduate who does? Tell us about it.

We are seeking recommendations for the first annual Saint Rose Alumni Gift Guide. The guide is a way to showcase businesses owned by Saint Rose graduates, allowing our network of alumni to show support for each other through their holiday shopping.

The guide will spotlight alumni and their products or services, while offering a listing of the others. The dozen featured products/services will be a sampling, selected in order to highlight a range of business owners (showing a variety of degrees, regions, etc.) and price-points.

To submit a suggestion, please email Irene Kim at kimi@strose.edu. You must include:

  • Name
  • Degree and graduation year
  • Name and location of your business
  • A description of the featured item or service, including a sentence of why the item or service would make a great gift
  • Purchase information: website, store address, and/or phone number
  • At least two sentences on what inspired you to start your business
  • At least two sentences on how Saint Rose helped shape your career
