Saint Rose President Marcia White sent the following message to the Saint Rose community tonight (May 5, 2022):

Dear students/colleagues,

I have very difficult news to share. I’m heartbroken to say we lost a member of our student community tonight.

Nathaniel Hopper, a senior majoring in music, passed away in Hahn Hall, where he lived. Albany Police and medical personnel were called to the scene and were not able to revive Nathaniel, who had an underlying medical condition. I have been in touch with Nathaniel’s family, and it is important that we hold his family and friends in our hearts and in our prayers.

Nathaniel has been a member of our Saint Rose family since 2017. He once served as an RA, was beloved within our music community, and many students and faculty knew and loved him.

We know this can be a stressful time of year with finals and final papers due. The Counseling Center is ready to provide support and will hold a session in the Interfaith Sanctuary at 11:15 p.m. tonight (Thursday, May 5) for everyone who was close to Nathaniel and wants to process this loss together. Counseling staff will be available both in the Counseling Center, on the third floor of Saint Joseph Hall, and in the Interfaith Sanctuary from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. tomorrow (Friday, May 6).

You can reach the counseling staff at 518.454.5200 or by email at counseling@strose.edu. If you need to speak with a counselor after hours, you can call the 24-7 security line at 518.454.5187.

Life is precious, and we lost Nathaniel way too soon. In this moment, nothing I can say will ease the pain of this loss or do justice to the beauty of Nathaniel’s life. We will share details on how we will honor Nathaniel’s memory on our campus soon.

Please care for yourselves and each other in this difficult time.

Sincerely,

Marcia White
President
