Counseling (Master of Science in Education)

The counseling program at The College of Saint Rose prepares competent professionals for the counseling field in a variety of settings. Classes are offered primarily in the evenings as well as during the day. Class sizes are kept small (12 - 20 students) to enable students to get the most from the program. Students are encouraged to become active and reflective learners through experiential coursework.

The counseling program at The College of Saint Rose offers a graduate degree program in counseling with concentrations in:

Professional School Counseling
Mental Health Counseling: Community
Mental Health Counseling: College

The respective concentrations prepare counselors to address the needs of their chosen populations in a pluralistic society. Students are encouraged to become culturally sensitive counselors, lifelong learners, and actively involved in their own personal and professional development.

We also offer certificate programs in Advanced Study in School Counseling.

For more information, contact Dr. Claudia Lingertat-Putnam, Program Coordinator or view the 2010-2012 program handbook.

Field Experience

Field experience is a vital component of the Saint Rose graduate program in counseling. Students gain 600 hours of hands-on experience through two internships over two semesters; each internship is 300 hours. We believe strongly in providing comprehensive and effective supervision for students during their field placement experiences. Concurrently with each internship, students are required to attend a seminar class for case consultation, peer review, and group supervision.

Students in the school counseling concentration gain valuable field experience working under the superivsion of a NYS certified school counselor in elementary and secondary settings. Students intern in rural, suburban and urban school settings.

In the mental health counseling community concentration students are able to gain supervised experience from a licensed mental health professional in community settings such as:

substance abuse treatment centers
mental health inpatient, residential and partial programs
EAP programs
programs working with the developmentally disabled
and many others.

Students in the mental health counseling college concentration complete one internship in a community setting and one internship in a college counseling center.

College Student Services Administration

Students interested in a less clinical counseling program who are still interested in working with college students may want to examine the College Student Services Adminstration degree.
