Overview

Do you like working with children and adolescents? Are you interested in working in a public or private school setting? Have you thought about helping students with academic, career and personal/social issues? If so, then our program in professional school counseling may be for you!

Our program prepares professional school counselors to work effectively in K-12 schools through a combination of challenging coursework and practical field experiences. We believe in preparing counseling professionals who can address the academic, personal/social and career counseling needs of students at the elementary and secondary levels. Students in our program are trained in a comprehensive, developmental approach to providing school counseling services. An emphasis is placed on working within the three domains of the American School Counseling Association national model of providing academic, personal/social and career counseling to all students.

We are deeply committed to preparing professionals who can advocate both for the profession and for issues of social justice. We believe that professional school counselors are central in helping all children achieve. To this end, graduate students in the school counseling program particiapte in service learning activties designed to increase awareness of social justice issues and meet community needs.


Curriculum

This 48 credit program leads to provisional certification in New York State as a professional school counselor.

Students take 18 credits of coursework in specialized school counseling concentration classes. These classes include two 300 hour internships in K-12 placements.

Dynamics of Group Counseling
Career Development Theory
Master's Seminar and Ethics in Counseling I
Master’s Seminar and Ethics in Counseling II
