Every once in a while, you have to change it up to keep things interesting. We have a new structure for In the Know, and instead of a “What’s New” section, we’ll keep things organized by topic and drop the fresh content for each topic at the top of that section.

This week, we’re starting with some academic news, because this is college after all, and that’s why we’re here. It’s also a key time in the semester. So, all you scholars out there, here we go:

Academics

The schedule, it is a-changin’. An email from Interim President Marcia J. White shared an important update on Friday – we’re delaying the Spring 2021 semester start date to January 19 (the day after Martin Luther King Day) as a COVID-19 precaution, and we’re eliminating spring break, which means you’ll be taking classes March 1 through 5. More details on the process and protocols for January will be shared soon since we’re ironing out the details. And everyone enjoys nice smooth details.

We know you hate email, but watch your email. Because you’re going to get some information early this week on winter/spring semester registration time slots. That’s also when we expect to post the Winter 2020 and Spring 2021 course offerings online. And there are 30 online undergraduate courses scheduled for the Winter Session, so plan to catch up or get ahead!

And speaking of planning and looking at your email … Advisement Day is Tuesday, November 3, so look for an email from your faculty advisors in order to make an advising appointment with them. (Also a great time to talk about Winter Session courses if you’re an undergrad).

Thinking about graduate school? Please join graduate admissions and the career center staff to learn the why, what, and how of applying to graduate school! The three-part series started on October 21 (Why Attend Graduate School), but you can still jump in for November 4 (What Makes a Successful Application), and November 18 (How to Apply for Graduate Financial Aid).

When one door opens, another closes: Maybe you want to close the door on a full-semester course you’re taking right now and withdraw? Your deadline to withdraw from a full-semester or 11-week course is October 30. Complete the withdrawal form here and send it to registrar@strose.edu or simply send your name, ID number, and information about which course(s) you would like to withdraw from to registrar@strose.edu. You are encouraged to talk with your faculty advisor and a representative from the Financial Aid Office before doing so.

Check your progress: Over the past two weeks, faculty have been completing student Progress Reports. To view your Progress Reports, please follow the instructions below:
• Log into Navigate online
• Use your SSO credentials to access your student home page (same login information as email).
• Navigate to the Reports tab.
• Under Progress Reports, click “View Report” to see comments made by your faculty member about your progress in their class.

If you have any questions or concerns about a class, you are encouraged to contact your professor directly.

The Writing Center schedule for Fall 2020: Sunday: 3 to 7 p.m., Monday: 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Tuesday: 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesday: 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., Thursday: 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., Friday: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. These hours represent a blend of in-person and online appointment availabilities. Please note that all appointments after 4 p.m. and on Sundays are online only for the Fall 2020 semester. Writing Lab will be open on Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Albertus 112 for students that prefer an open-lab approach. Appointments are necessary for all services and can be made on the Navigate app under the care unit “Academic Support.” Under locations, select “Writing Center” for an in-person appointment, “Writing Online” for an online appointment, and “Writing Lab” for Writing Lab.

Looking for someone to study with from your classes? Have a question about an assignment but aren’t sure who to ask? Sign up for the Study Buddies feature on Navigate! Once you sign up, you can reach out to others in your class to get the help you need – and be able to help others! Study Buddies can be accessed by clicking on the corresponding icon on the “Explore” navigation guide of the mobile app. This is another great way the Navigate app can help you stay organized and on top of your assignments this semester.

Tutoring: The Academic Success Center is holding in-person/drop-in hours during the school day Monday through Friday. They will also be holding online hours Sunday through Friday to accommodate online students.

Tutoring schedules are posted, and the hours can be found on the website.

Need a place to take an online course when you’re on campus? Commuter students have a place to go when their on-campus and remote classes are scheduled close together. They’re called Study Stops, and you can click here to see where they’re located.

It’s the last week for the flu shot clinic! The clinic will be held by appointment only, in the auditorium of Saint Joseph Hall, on Wednesday (October 28) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. You should bring your health insurance card to the flu shot clinic, and if the shot isn’t covered by your insurance, you will be charged $42.99. Shots can also be obtained at local pharmacies and through Albany County.

Here is information on how to schedule an appointment with location and times:

To sign up

• Fully complete the Immunization Questionnaire found at https://redcap02.acphs.edu/surveys/?s=WL97X43AAF by 2 p.m. Tuesday in order to provide enough time for processing.

• You will be redirected to the appointment scheduler to reserve an appointment time upon completion of your survey.

Important reminders

• Please be sure that all COVID-19 requirements have been completed. If you have not already done so, complete the COVID-19 requirements before scheduling an appointment at the flu shot clinic. Do not come to the flu shot clinic if you are sick.

• Please do not bring anyone to your appointment.

• Please be sure to wear clothing that will allow for access to the injection site and appropriate facial covering to your appointment.

Feel free to contact The Collaboratory at 518.487.4117 ext 103 or College Parkside Pharmacy at 518.694.8522 with any questions you have regarding your immunization. You can also email Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences at FluClinic@acphs.edu with any questions or concerns.

COVID-19 update: If you caught Director of Counseling and Health Service Mark Parisi’s weekly update on Friday, you know that we didn’t have any new COVID-19 cases on campus last week. You also know that the two recent rapid testing clinics, which tested 218 people, turned up zero positive results. Nice! Read the October 23 update here.

Visiting the Counseling Center: Due to COVID-19 precautions, no student walk-ins are allowed at the Counseling Center, and students will not wait for appointments in the waiting room. Students should call 518.454.5200 or email counseling@strose.edu for assistance and appointments. Hours of operation are Monday/Wednesday/Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Tuesday/Thursday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Reminder: The Counseling Center is now located on the third floor of Saint Joseph Hall.

Need Health Services?: Due to COVID-19 precautions, student walk-ins are not allowed at Health Services, and we students won’t wait for appointments in the waiting room. Students will call 518.454.5244 or email healthservices@strose.edu for assistance, and their cases will be triaged by our LPN or nurse practitioner. Based on the presenting concerns, the triage outcome may lead to a telehealth appointment with the nurse practitioner. Our new expanded hours in Health Services are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. And don’t forget to contact Health Services if you need COVID-19 testing.

Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity

Put us on your calendar for October 30. That’s when the next Campus Conversation on Diversity and Inclusion will be held via Zoom at noon. This conversation will focus on the upcoming election and how to navigate whatever comes of this unprecedented time – in the classroom, on campus, and in our communities. Join us for resources and information. Attend the meeting via Zoom (Passcode: Saint Rose).

Don’t forget to check out this exhibition! “Engage: Artists in Visual Dialogue” spans 91 years and features 22 artists of diverse ethnicities and backgrounds whose subject matter and creative media vary greatly. The exhibition runs through November 21 at the Esther Massry Gallery. Read more about “Engage” in this story. Gallery hours are Monday through Saturday from noon to 5 p.m.; Wednesday and Thursday from noon to 8 p.m.; and closed Sunday. It is free and open to the public, but due to COVID-19 protocol, visitors must call the gallery phone at 518.337.2390 to gain entrance to the building.

We’ve extended the deadline for video mosaic for racial justice, solidarity, and much-needed societal change, and we’re delaying the debut of the video: The new deadline is Friday, October 30, at 5 p.m. You can contribute to the video mosaic by sharing your poetry, song, video commentary, artwork, dance, or other expression of your thoughts and feelings on this important subject. Submit your work for possible inclusion by emailing it to marketing@strose.edu with the subject line “expressions.” Large file sizes will not send through the campus email, so please consider using a file-sharing platform like We Transfer. We will include as many pieces in the video as we can, but selection is not guaranteed.

Tech stuff

Protect yourself. We recently had several students who had their passwords hacked, so be on your guard, Saint Rose. Here are some tips from ITS.

Are you still using your original Saint Rose passwords?

Passwords get stale as they age and become more vulnerable to hackers over time. Best practices say that you should change your password every 90 days. You should also employ password complexity by using a mix of upper and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters. Never use a single word as a password because hackers use electronic dictionaries to guess passwords. Generally, the longer your password is, the more difficult it is to guess or hack. To help you remember a long or complex password, use a phrase with some numbers or special characters along with a mix of upper and lower case letters. For example:

Password: my cat weighs 9 pounds and is fat! (Note that spaces can be used in a password)

Of course, you probably have many other passwords other than your Saint Rose passwords. The same guidelines apply for banking accounts, credit cards, online shopping, and other accounts. You need to be extremely cautious and protect your personal data.

To change your Saint Rose passwords, go to the reset page. While there, be sure to also set your security questions.

Take the survey! Information Technology Services is conducting its annual Student Technology Survey. The College wants to get your input to help make appropriate and informed decisions regarding technology on campus. You pay a technology fee, so it is important that you have a say in how that money is allocated. You will be receiving a message from John Ellis, associate vice president for IT, in the next few days. Please take a few minutes to complete the survey so that you can have input into important technology decisions. Individual responses will be kept confidential; results will only be reported in aggregate.

Announcements that defy categorization

Chicken tender fans and Bru residents, rejoice! Food Services has announced an expansion of its meal equivalent plan. The program has allowed those with meal swipes to use them three times a week in Camelot on specific combo meals, rather than having to use dining dollars. They’ve now added some additional meal options (chicken tenders!) and expanded the meal equivalent option to the Brubacher Café. See more details, including the meal equivalent menu, under the Hours section of the newsletter.

Got your mind on your money and your money on your mind? If you’re a student worker for the College, that money (i.e. your paycheck) will be mailed to the address you have on file with Human Resources after October 21 unless you sign up for direct deposit. If you don’t have a bank yet, the College now has a partnership with SEFCU. SEFCU brings its mobile branch to campus on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to noon on the Campus Green outside the entrance for the athletics area of the EAC. Students who work for the College and need to cash College payroll checks can do so at the mobile branch free of charge and without a SEFCU account until the end of October. After that, you’d need to become a SEFCU member.

Service to the dear neighbor: We wouldn’t be Saint Rose if we didn’t commemorate our 100th birthday with a 100 Hours of Service challenge. Well, it’s officially called a 100 Hours of Service initiative, but we’re challenging you to get involved. From being a club leader or a student-athlete to babysitting for family to social-justice work, you are already giving back. For the 100 Hours of Service challenge, just do 2.5 to 3 hours of community service each week from now until May to hit the 100-hour goal. Employees of the College, alums, and some of your families have already joined in, too. Watch our video to learn the why. Then click on this link to learn the how and sign up.

Get your swag. The Saint Rose Alumni Association has set up a centennial store where you can get a 100th anniversary Saint Rose shirt, mug, and a really bomb poster (someone’s mom would love it as a holiday gift, too).
