Lunch and learn with Dr. Angela Ledford: Students are invited to join Dr. Ledford for a lunchtime conversation on race and mass incarceration in the United States on Tuesday, October 4, at noon in the dining hall. If you’re registered for our October 11 talk with bestselling author and activist Michelle Alexander, this is a great way to prepare for the discussion. Hope to see you there!

Get to know our new Title IX Coordinator: On Friday, you got an email from Kateeka Harris, Saint Rose’s new Title IX Coordinator. In case you need a reminder, Title IX is the federal law prohibiting sex discrimination at federally funded institutions. That can mean discriminatory treatment in educational programs or activities, including sexual harassment, or sexual or interpersonal violence. Kateeka wants to hear from all of you, whether you have questions, comments, or concerns. We hope you’ll join her at one of her Town Hall Listening Sessions this month! The first session is October 5 at 6 p.m., and the second is October 18 at 7 p.m. – both sessions will be held on Zoom.

Clean out your closet for the GK Shop: Saint Rose’s very own thrift shop is looking for donations! Bring your gently used clothing to the basement of the Sanctuary all week. The GK Shop will be holding a FREE Closet Clean Out thrift shop on October 19 from noon to 4 p.m. in the Standish Room.

Are you the Billy Eichner of Saint Rose? Our social media team is looking for an outgoing, talkative student to host a new video series, Knights on the Street! If you’re someone who isn’t afraid to go up to random students and ask rapid-fire questions, email marketing@strose.edu ASAP.

Now available at the Saint Rose bookstore: Michelle Alexander’s bestselling book, “The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness!” Grab your very own copy before Alexander comes to campus on October 11. If you’d like to access the free digital version, the library has got you covered

Speaking of Michelle Alexander … the October 11 discussion with the author is all filled up! If you’re still interested in watching the conversation live, you can join us at the Interfaith Sanctuary to watch the livestream from 7 to 8:15 p.m. Want to watch it from the comfort of your dorm (or apartment)? Tune into the livestream on our YouTube channel at 7 p.m. on October 11.

Learn about Restorative Justice with our Community Service team! RJ is a theory of justice that focuses on rehabilitating the relationship between offender and victim. It hopes to provide reconciliation in a way that punitive punishments do not. Join our Community Service team in the EAC on October 5 and 6 to learn more and take action!

Save the date (and sharpen your pencils) … the National Day on Writing is coming up! Join the Writing Center for the National Day on Writing in the EAC Main Lounge from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, October 20. There will be writing-related games and activities, candy, and chances to win prizes! You may even see your favorite writing tutor, librarian, or professor helping run one of our activities. Don’t miss out on the fun!

Can you tell a scary story in two sentences? Compete in the 2022 Two-Sentence Spooky Story Contest, presented by the Neil Hellman Library and the Writing Center in conjunction with the National Day of Writing! Enter for a chance to win a BRAND NEW Amazon Fire HD 10 Tablet. Submissions can be made in the library, the Writing Center, and on the Library’s website here. The winner will be selected by popular vote at the National Day on Writing event on October 20 in the EAC Main Lounge. Looking for some inspiration? Check out these 30 Scary Two Sentence Horror Stories to Read in the Dark.

Celebrate Latinx Heritage Month with us! Student Development has come up with a fun schedule of events through October 15. Head to the Calendar section for the full schedule.

Participate in the Michelle Alexander Challenge! To help you get ready for what will be an incredible discussion with author Michelle Alexander on October 11, Sister Honora Kinney and the Challenge Committee are inviting you to take part in the Michelle Alexander Challenge! The challenge offers readings that teach you more about Alexander’s work and the issues she writes about. If you are interested in participating, please register here.

Join the Saint Rose Cross Country team! The Saint Rose men’s and women’s cross country teams are looking for students to join their team! Whether you competed in cross country in high school, enjoy running for fun, or are looking for a chance to become a collegiate student-athlete, cross country is a great opportunity to represent the College in the NCAA. All undergraduate and first-year graduate students are welcome! If you’re interested, please contact Coach Jones at jonesn@strose.edu, or come say hi in the XCTF Office in EAC Basement 019.

We need swim instructors! Did you know Saint Rose offers swim lessons for our community every Monday night? Well, we need new volunteer swim instructors of all levels (even non-swimmers) to make sure that keeps happening! This looks great on a resume, plus you can get your American Red Cross water safety certification! Lessons start October 3 and end November 1 and run from 5:45 to 7:45 p.m. If you’re interested, please contact Dr. Ann Neilson at neilsona@strose.edu or 518.454.5248.

Take advantage of Navigate! Navigate is an app Saint Rose students use to successfully navigate (get it?) the ins and outs of college life, which is why you’re required to download it! This free app allows for better communication with your advisors and faculty, helps you stay on track, and serves as a one-stop shop for resources. Learn more about Navigate on our website.

Download the RAVE Guardian app! Our No. 1 priority is your health and safety, which is why we are requiring that all of our students download RAVE Guardian, a mobile safety app. Learn more about how to download the app here

And don’t forget to sign up for RAVE Alerts: Saint Rose uses the RAVE Alert system to quickly communicate emergency information, like weather alerts, closings, delays, and other serious situations, to our students, faculty, and staff. If you haven’t already, make sure you sign up to receive the alerts through Banner.
