Commencement news at last (and it’s good)! We’re excited to celebrate the Class of 2021 and the Class of 2020 in three commencement ceremonies at the Times Union Center in May. The ceremonies will take place Friday, May 7, and Saturday, May 8. See Interim President Marcia White’s message to the graduates on Friday for the good news and the commencement section of the website for all the details.

Honors Convocation:This year we will celebrate Honors Convocation, which recognizes students who have demonstrated distinguished academic achievement, through live virtual ceremonies for each of our four schools. Please mark your calendars for these dates with more details to follow from Academic Affairs.
Huether School of Business: Friday, April 23, at 5:30 p.m.
School of Mathematics and Sciences: Friday, April 23, at 7 p.m.
School of Arts and Humanities: Friday, April 30, at 5:30 p.m.
Thelma P. Lally School of Education: Friday, April 30, at 7 p.m.

Attention current first-year students:As previously announced, the College has reinstated the two-year housing requirement for the 2021-2022 academic year. This means that current first-year students who live outside of a 60-mile radius must reside on-campus during their second year, regardless of whether they were approved to live off-campus for the 2020-2021 academic year. All students have received information about the Room Reservation process for next year. The Returning Student Application will remain open through April 11. All first-year students who live outside of a 60-mile radius must complete the application and be prepared to select housing. Students who do not complete the application and/or select housing and have not received an appeal approval will be assigned to housing by the Office of Residence Life when selection is completed.

If you have questions regarding the process of selecting a room, Residence Life is holding weekly Zoom drop-in hours. The next session is April 1 at 1 p.m (Zoom Meeting ID 958 2075 6543).

To be considered for an appeal to the 2021-2022 housing requirement, you must meet one of the following criteria:
· Change in household income
· Parent/guardian has tested positive for COVID-19 and the student is the primary caregiver
· Diagnosed physical or mental health condition
· Residing with a family member within 60 miles of campus
Students who would like to appeal should submit an email and required supporting documentation to resliferoomres@strose.edu.

Important info for graduate-level students: Graduate-level should check their Saint Rose email for an email from the Registrar regarding their ALT PINS for the upcoming registration period. A computer glitch caused several students to receive a wrong ALT PIN with mostly 0s for Winter 2021 and Spring 2022. The problem is being corrected and you will receive a correct PIN for those semesters from the Registrar via email. Please note, the ALT PINS are correct in Banner for Summer 2021 and Fall 2021, so the PIN advisors are providing students for those semesters is correct.

Student Association (SA) elections for the 2021-2022 executive board have begun! If you are interested in running, please contact Student Association at sa@strose.edu (Subject Line: Elections) for more information. Candidates will be petitioning starting Friday, March 26, until Tuesday, April 6, at 8 p.m., so don’t be surprised if a student asks you to complete their Google form to show your support to their candidacy. All candidates will talk about their platform and answer questions from you during Open Forums the week of April 12 – dates and times to be announced soon. Then voting runs from Monday, April 19, to Wednesday, April 21. Students will receive an email from SA with more details. Show your support and make sure to vote this April. Want to get involved? Want to run? Know someone who should represent the student body? Then contact SA for more information. Best of luck to all our candidates!

Join the 21-Day Diversity and Inclusion Challenge at Saint Rose: The 21-Day Diversity and Inclusion Challenge at Saint Rose is a campus-wide initiative that presents a new theme each week, tackling topics such as race, power, privilege, and leadership. Participants will engage in a series of tasks to help foster their awareness of the topic and reflect on their personal experiences. The 21-Day Diversity and Inclusion Challenge launches April 1 and closes May 1. We encourage you to sign up as a team or with a friend, holding you and your peers accountable for each other!

Stop reading for a moment and complete this survey: As you know, Saint Rose has partnered with the Higher Education Data Sharing Consortium (HEDS) to administer a College-wide survey to better understand Saint Rose’s climate and level of support for diversity and equity. The survey also assesses whether and how often campus members have experienced bias, discrimination, or harassment. We ask that you take the 10- to 15-minute survey to help Saint Rose become a more inclusive and equitable environment. We will use the results to inform and improve policies and practices at Saint Rose. Answers are completely anonymous. Click here to start the survey. The last day to complete the survey is Friday, April 2.

A can’t-miss budgeting workshop: The BOLD Women’s Leadership Network and the Women’s Leadership Institute will present “The Boujie Budgeter’s (Mykail James) Know Your Needs,” an interactive budgeting workshop on Thursday, April 8, at 6 p.m. Visit @boldwomenleadcsr or @womensleadershipinstitute for more information.

“Navigating Online Classes” workshop on March 30: The Academic Success Center and Center for Counseling and Psychological Services will host a workshop on navigating online classes from 3 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 30, via Zoom (Meeting ID: 966 5926 9559 Passcode: CSRZOOMTIP). Learn tips, tricks, and resources for finishing the semester strong.

Kosher meals available in Camelot Room: The Camelot Room is offering grab-and-go Kosher meals for Passover March 27 through April 4. These meals are made and sealed in microwavable container in a Kosher facility. Just pop them in the microwave for a few minutes, and they are good to go. There are breakfast, lunch, and dinner options. Dinner items include dishes such as beef brisket and spaghetti and meatballs.

Reminders

Have fun cooking and feed the homeless: If you love to cook and want to help others, the Office of Community Service will be making vegetable gnocchi for the Interfaith Partnership for the Homeless. Join the gnocchi-making session on March 30 from noon to 2 p.m. or March 31 from noon to 2 p.m. in the Interfaith Sanctuary. Advance sign-up is required.

Course listings are out! Here’s your reminder that course listings are now available on the website. One thing to keep in mind: The goal for Fall 2021 is to have as much in-person instruction as possible, with the exception of courses/programs that were originally designed to be delivered online. Some courses have been listed as hybrid to make sure there is an in-person component given current social-distancing requirements and therefore room-capacity limits. New CDC guidance for P-12 schools suggests 3 feet of social distance is adequate to guard against the spread of COVID. If those same guidelines are recommended for higher education, it would allow more in-person opportunities for those courses currently listed as hybrid. We will keep you posted on how this evolves.

While we’re talking about graduating … Senior portrait sessions will be available with iSmile Studios on campus from April 21-24 with no booking fee. See this flier for more details.

Want another way to stay in the know? Then start following Office of Student Life’s brand-new Instagram account @csrstudentlife You will find updates from all clubs and offices about events. Spotlight features of Golden Knights and staff you should get to know. Behind the scenes content of events and highlights of all clubs. Plus, raffles and giveaways each month. Follow and comment to be entered into raffles!

Use Navigate to schedule those appointments: Please remember that appointments with campus offices should be scheduled through the Navigate app. We’ve had some visitors to Saint Joseph Hall recently who did not schedule using the app, and that’s part of the COVID-19 protocols. Don’t have Navigate? (We’re lowering our glasses and giving you the look, you know). Learn how to get it and about all the amazing features it offers students on our website. And we’ll help you with the app if you’re having trouble. Just give us a shout at navigate@strose.edu.

Ask a Golden Knight Guide: The Golden Knight Guide program is a mentorship program to support first-year students. During “Ask a Golden Knight Guide,” students can jump on a Zoom session from 2 to 3 p.m. on Tuesdays, and the Zoom will be staffed by Student Development mentors who can offer guidance, help students explore College resources, and offer a chance for students to meet other students with the same questions.

Volunteer opportunity: Do you have a few hours to volunteer between now and August? Dr. Julienne Cuccio Slichko, assistant professor of literacy and special education, is looking for volunteers to help promote, organize, and work on The RIDE 4 Autism. Proceeds of this event are going to the Friday Knights program at Saint Rose for kids on the autism spectrum. The motorcycle ride/BBQ fundraiser takes place on Saturday, August 21. You don’t have to ride a motorcycle to participate, and you do not have to attend the event to volunteer. To volunteer, you can sign up online. Email Dr. Slichko at slichkoj@strose.edu if you have questions. Why help? Last year, the ride raised $4,000 for Friday Knights.

Remembering those we’ve lost: The Office of Spiritual Life recognizes that many people in our community may have lost loved ones this year. A Wall of Remembering has been created in the Interfaith Sanctuary, and students are invited to add the names of those they’ve lost to the wall as a way to honor them.

Find a buddy for when you study: Speaking of how incredible the Navigate app is, you can use it to find a study buddy for your courses. The process is simple:
• Go to Study Buddies in the Navigate menu.
• Select the classes where you want to connect with a Study Buddy.
• If another student in the class has indicated they want a Study Buddy, too, their name will appear. If no one shows up, keep checking back.
• You can email whoever has said they’re looking for a Buddy right from the app and arrange a time to meet (either masked and socially distanced in person or online).
• Follow these tips for Study Buddy success: Choose the right platform for your needs (Zoom, etc.), set an agenda, rotate and share responsibilities, and set regular meetings throughout the semester.

Taylor P. Farnsworth Annual Scholarship: The family of Taylor Paige Farnsworth ’18 wish to honor her life by creating a scholarship in her name. The scholarship will be awarded to a Saint Rose student enrolled in the B.A. in Communications degree program, with first preference for a student concentrating in journalism. Students interested in receiving the Taylor P. Farnsworth Annual Scholarship should submit a one-page essay on the following topic to the chair of the Communication Department by April 1. What value does journalism have in society and how do you think you can contribute to the field of journalism? The scholarship may be applied to any academic-related expenses including tuition, fees, book, or other materials. Email your essay submission to mcgrathk@strose.edu.

Show off your work! The 2021 Undergraduate Research Symposium will be held on Tuesday, April 13, from 5 to 6 p.m. on Zoom. The Symposium is an opportunity for undergraduates to present their research projects to faculty, peers, and other members of the Saint Rose community. This experience can be especially valuable to students who will be participating in other regional or national conferences or for those interested in pursuing a graduate degree. All participants must submit a project abstract, prepare a formal research poster, and attend the virtual Symposium. Participants are also encouraged to compete for the Library Undergraduate Research Symposium. Cash prizes will be awarded to the best research projects in two broad categories: Mathematics and Science and Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. Students have until Tuesday, March 30 to submit their proposals. Find more information on submitting a project here.

Study stops: If you’re commuting to campus and need a place to take a class or study between on-campus classes, we’ve once again designated rooms throughout campus as Study Stops. Just be sure to follow social distancing measures and use headphones if you’re taking a class.

Student Events Board (SEB) honored with a national award: ICYMI last week, SEB was recently awarded the 2020 Programming Organization of the Year by the Association for the Promotion of Campus Activities (APCA) – a national award. With a drive to increase student involvement and offer creative and fresh events, it should come as no surprise that SEB was previously the recipient of the 2019 Boyd Jones National Organization of the Year as well as the 2018 Northeast Regional Organization of the Year. Read what SEB President Jordan Veihdeffer ’21 has to say about the award and more in this story.

Reporting possible exposure: Please remember if you have been exposed to anyone that has tested positive for COVID-19 or you suspect you may have been exposed but are unsure, contact Health Services at 518.454.5244 or email covidresults@strose.edu to notify the College and discuss your particular situation so we can best advise you on how to proceed. Remember, this directive applies whether the positive case is affiliated with Saint Rose or not.

Easter break and travel: With April less than a week away, many are looking forward to the Easter break, which grants us a long weekend by way of a Friday (April 2) and Monday (April 5) holiday from classes. The CDC is still discouraging unnecessary travel in order to prevent the further spread of COVID-19. If you do plan to travel, please continue to follow the CDC travel guidelines for maximizing public health noted here. In addition, be mindful of the changes to the NYS travel guidelines that will take effect April 1.

New support groups: The Counseling and Psychological Services Center is pleased to announce the availability of group counseling this semester. Our center is offering four pandemic support groups and a BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and people of color) support group via Zoom.

  • Pandemic: Mondays (2 p.m.), Tuesdays (4:30 p.m.), Wednesdays (11 a.m.), Fridays (2 p.m.)
  • BIPOC: Thursdays at 5 p.m.

If you are interested in joining one of the groups or just have questions, please call our center at 518.454.5200 or email us at counseling@strose.edu.

Surveillance testing: The surveillance testing is conducted using a non-invasive technique involving a saliva sample. You will be tested multiple times this semester and even if you have been vaccinated, you are required to test. We do not know enough about the vaccine to know if you could be a carrier and transmit the virus to others. You do not need to contact Health Services for this. They will reach out on Thursdays to those who have been randomly selected via email. If you are having COVID-19 testing done, be sure to not drink or eat anything a half hour before your testing appointment. If you cannot make testing times, we ask that you email covidresults@strose.edu. If your plans have changed and you are no longer attending in-person classes or coming to campus for any reason, we ask that you notify us by emailing covidresults@strose.edu.

Help with substance abuse: The Counseling and Psychological Services Center says that with the pandemic, substance abuse is on the rise. Are you struggling but not sure if you’ve crossed the line when it comes to using substances like drugs or alcohol? Check out this guide from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. This flier from the Counseling and Psychological Services Center also explains signs of substance abuse and how to reach out to them help.

These meals are made and sealed in microwavable container in a Kosher facility. Just pop them in the microwave for a few minutes, and they are good to go. There are breakfast, lunch, and dinner options. Dinner items include dishes such as beef brisket and spaghetti and meatballs.
