Happy New Year, Golden Knights! It may not feel like it (looking at you, -1° weather), but the spring semester officially starts in two days. We hope you were able to take plenty of time to rest and recharge over break.

Classes may be remote this week, but we’ve still got plenty of important updates and reminders for you in the first In the Know of the semester. Keep reading for all the info you’ll need to have a great first week back.

P.S. Do you have any announcements or events to share with other students? Get the word out! Email your In the Know submissions to Sarah at heikkins@strose.edu by 5 p.m. on Thursdays to be featured in the next edition.

MLK Week activities: “It Starts With Me” is a four-day introspective centering the life of Dr. Martin Luther King that kicks off on January 24. The Saint Rose community will have the opportunity to gain insights about Dr. King and find the alignment with themselves and the College – scholarly, energetic, and socially active. See the schedule of events under the calendar section.

Now, a refresher on our COVID protocols: Over the winter break, you received an email with the College’s updated COVID protocols for this semester. You can catch up on all the updates here and please keep an eye on your Saint Rose email this week for more. In the meantime, here are the main things you need to know:

  • Classes: The first week of spring classes begins on Tuesday, January 18. To allow time for thorough testing of our Saint Rose community before in-person classes begin, all classes will be held remotely this week. In-person instruction will begin again on Monday, January 24.
  • Testing: All students and employees who will be coming to campus during the spring 2022 semester are required to participate in on-campus COVID-19 testing at the start of the semester, regardless of vaccination status. If you can, we encourage you to take a COVID test before coming back to campus, because if your test is positive, you can safely quarantine at home. We’ll be offering on-campus testing on Tuesday, January 18, from 9:30 a.m. to noon in the Nolan Gymnasium (located in the Events and Athletics Center) – if you haven’t already, please sign up for a test here.
  • Resident students: You’ll receive a self-test kit from your RA upon move in. You can also sign up here for a test on January 24, 25, or 26 in St. Joe’s Auditorium from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. If you can’t make any of those days, please email Jen Richardson at richardj@strose.edu to make other arrangements.
  • Commuter and graduate students: If you can’t make it to Tuesday’s testing clinic in the Nolan Gym, you’ll be able to pick up self-test kits through the window in Jen Richardson’s office facing the quad until 6:30 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday.
  • Quarantine: In the event that you test positive when you get back to campus, you’ll need to quarantine in our designated campus housing. If you live off-campus, you’ll need to quarantine at home.
  • Events: We’ve made some updates to our event protocols for the spring semester. If you’re organizing an event on-campus, please look it over closely and contact the Office of Conferences and Events.
  • Dining hall this week: Please note that the dining hall will be takeout only for the first week of the semester. It will resume in-person dining on January 24.
  • Get boosted: Did you know the booster increases immune response and offers significant protection from the virus? If you haven’t already, we strongly encourage you to get the booster dose of the vaccine. We’ll be holding on-campus booster clinics on January 20, February 3, March 3, and April 7. If you were vaxxed at one of our clinics last semester, good news! You’ll be eligible to get the third dose at one of those clinics. Sign up here.

You may be eligible for a $5,000 scholarship! If you’re a sophomore or junior and are involved in service to the community – social, political, educational, or charitable – you may be eligible for one of two $5,000 scholarships being awarded for the 2022-2023 academic year! The Honorable Richard J. Conners Memorial Scholarship honors the spirit of community service exemplified by the former Albany City Council President and longtime NYS Assemblyman whose three daughters are Saint Rose alumni. Learn more about the scholarship and apply here.

Help support the St. Catherine’s Center for Children! To help those in need in our community, St. Catherine’s Pathways to Health is holding a coat and glove drive. Donate your lightly used or new coats and gloves to help benefit individuals and families in need in our community! Donations can be dropped off outside the EAC Main Lounge through January 31.

Attention National Society of Leadership and Success members: The Saint Rose NSLS chapter is looking for new E-board members! They’re currently looking for a treasurer and an SNT coordinator. Apply today on the NSLS website!

An update from ITS: ITS had planned on replacing the wireless network over the holiday break. Unfortunately, there were some serious technical issues that the vendor and manufacturer were unable to resolve. While ITS continues to work on getting these issues resolved, the new plan is to replace the wireless network at a later date. ITS will notify everyone once the new project timeline is finalized. ITS regrets this decision but it is in the best interests of the College community to wait until the issues are resolved.

An update from the Athletics Department: At this time, basketball games are closed to student and employee spectators. They hope to have everyone back in Nolan Gymnasium as soon as the number of COVID-19 cases in the region drops off.

Reminders:

Mask up, Saint Rose! Just like last semester, masks must be worn inside all College buildings.

Don’t forget to check in each day. You know what we’re talking about – the daily health questionnaire. It’s still vital that you keep filling this out, because it allows the College to act promptly should a student test positive for, have close exposure to, or have symptoms of COVID-19.

Did you get the booster? Please send a copy of your updated vaccine card to covidresults@strose.edu ASAP!

Okay, we think it’s time to celebrate YOU!

Congrats to everyone who made it on the Fall 2021 Dean’s List! Over 620 of you earned a 3.5 average or higher last semester – that’s incredible. We’re so proud of each and every one of you for continuing to thrive academically, especially in these times. Go, Golden Knights!

Our students make Saint Rose feel like home: Our campus culture has evolved so much, thanks to the students who have created their own spaces and communities that feel like home. Read about the clubs and organizations, like the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and Saint Rose Identity, that make our school so special on our website

What a champ! Congrats to Harry Soederland ’22 on being named one of the RNMKRS speed sell regional north champions! Soederland took top honors among business students across the country in the Fall 2021 RNMKRS Virtual Sales Competition, the largest and first-ever competition of its kind, which was sponsored by Dell. Congrats again, Harry!

#ICYMI: In November, a team of Saint Rose students took second place in the 2021 College Fed Challenge. Designed to bring real-world economics into the classroom, the competition – sponsored by the Federal Reserve Board – challenges students to play the role of monetary policymakers. Congrats to the Saint Rose team on a job well done!

Help us stop the spread! We’re gonna keep saying it every week, but the only way we’ll get through this wave of the pandemic is by working together! Keep yourself and your friends safe by properly wearing your masks inside (we’re talking mouth AND nose covered, people), limiting contact with people outside of your bubble, getting your booster, and checking the restart website for updates. If you or someone you know has been exposed to COVID-19, email covidresults@strose.edu so we can help you figure out what to do next.

Download Liberate! The Counseling Center recommends Liberate, meditation app, as a fantastic resource for Black students looking to develop a daily meditation habit. For more resources for BIPOC mental health, visit the Counseling Center website!

Each kit includes finger and regular condoms, dental dams, and lube. Email counseling@strose.edu or healthservices@strose.edu for more information.

COVID Emotional Support Hotline: This past year has been rough, especially with all the changes we’ve seen on campus. If you need immediate support, the New York State Department of Health offers a COVID-19 Emotional Support Hotline at 844.863.9314.

The Albany County Crime Victim and Sexual Violence Center is now on campus: The CVSVC’s advocacy services will be offered in the Counseling Center every Monday from 3 to 4 p.m. Their confidential Campus Coordinator will be there to explain your rights under Title IX, help students get extra time on assignments or change their classes/housing, answer your questions on reporting sexual and/or interpersonal violence, and help connect you with a counselor. Make an appointment today by contacting Amanda at 518.447.7100 or Amanda.Wingle@albanycountyny.gov.
