Swipes running low? Having trouble affording food? Everyone needs help sometimes, and the College has support if you’re experiencing food insecurity. Our new Emergency Meal Bag program allows any member of our Saint Rose community to make an online request for a bag – and specify food preferences – and pick bags up at the Interfaith Sanctuary. Each bag contains enough food for three meals each – breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Pick-up times are Mondays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Emergency meal bags will be available at the Lima Security Desk.

In addition, for students not already on a meal plan, the Annie Sheeley Meal Swipe Program provides three meals a week for four weeks in our Dining Hall. (Students are able to re-apply.) The program is named in honor of Annie Sheeley, a longtime worker in our Dining Hall, who passed away earlier this year. See the College’s website for other sources of help.

Check out the undergrad final exam schedule: The final exam schedule for undergraduate courses is out, and it starts Friday, April 30. Your exams are scheduled based on when your class typically meets. (If you have a fully online class, please consult with your professor about exams.)

Stress-Free Week: The Counseling Center will be promoting tips during Stress-Free Week on its Instagram account. Be sure to give them a follow @csrcounselingctr, and learn some tips for managing stress here.

Join a community art project: During “Moving Forward in Unity, Using Art to Heal!” Mary Bilik and her students will be facilitating the creation of a mural, providing an opportunity for students to process the impact of the pandemic. The event will take place on Wednesday, April 28, from 1 to 5 p.m. on the Campus Green. Come participate and contribute a piece of art to the mural! All materials will be supplied, just bring your creativity.

Grab some food during the Nighty Knight finals event in the Dining Hall: On Tuesday, May 4, from 9:30 to 11 p.m., Hospitality Services will be hosting its first annual Nighty Knight finals event in the Dining Hall. The event is a donation from Sodexo and is free to any student with a Saint Rose ID card. You do not have to have a meal plan to stop up that night and grab some food. Due to COVID-19 precautions, everything will be grab-and-go. The menu will include wrapped breakfast sandwiches (egg and cheese/sausage, egg, and cheese), hash brown patties, French toast sticks with syrup, assorted mini muffins, assorted juice cups, mini bottles of water, Dole fruit cups, and assorted yogurts.

Make enchiladas and feed the hungry: The Office of Community Service will lead another cooking lesson this week while making a meal for the Interfaith Partnership for the Homeless. Join them in the Interfaith Sanctuary basement on Wednesday, April 28, from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Slots are limited, and you must register for the Enchilada making in advance online.

Join us for “I Love My NY Park Day”: Help clean up our local parks (and get a free brown bag lunch) on Saturday, May 1, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Meet on the Campus Green by the Interfaith Sanctuary, and the group will walk to nearby Ridgefield Park. Be sure to sign up online before Wednesday, April 28, in order to receive lunch (or feel free to bring your own). Clean-up supplies will be provided. Please show up with a face mask, as COVID protocols and safety measures will be followed. The event is sponsored by SAAC, SA, and the Office of Community Service.

Grieving a loss? The Office of Spiritual Life is hosting a “Circle of Light Service” on Tuesday, April 27, from 7:30 to 8 p.m. at the Campus Green entrance to the Events and Athletics Center (EAC) to remember anyone who has passed away. Light a candle in memory of your loved one.

Check out the Vickery Lecture this week: Dr. Naomi Zack, a professor of philosophy at Lehman College, CUNY, and author of the newly released “The American Tragedy of COVID-19: Social and Political Crises of 2020,” discussed marginalization and inequity during the COVID-19 pandemic during the Vickery Lecture in Ethics and Leadership on April 23. ICYMI, you can check out the Zoom recording here (Passcode: R=ef?K2w).

Interested in an MBA? There is an online open house for our Flex MBA on Saturday, May 1, at 10 a.m. You’ll get to speak with the program chair, Dr. John Dion, and the Office of Graduation Admissions about the program and the admissions process.

Reminders

New guidelines for indoor gatherings of 40 or more: Just a reminder that the College has a new process called EventClear for indoor gatherings of 40 or more that started April 24. Short version: Attendees at indoor events of 40 or more must show either:

  • Proof of a completed vaccine series with the last dose occurring at least 14 days prior to the event

OR

  • Results of a negative PCR COVID test taken within 72 hours of the event or a rapid antigen test taken within 6 hours of the event.

If you are planning to provide proof of vaccination (your vaccine card) or off-campus test results, that documentation must be emailed to eventclear@strose.edu no later than 4 p.m. on the day of the event. If you sign up for on-campus testing in preparation for the event, it is taken care of for you. You can read more details about testing availability and event details on the Student Development area of the website.

Deadline to take Healthy Minds Study is May 7. Be sure to participate for a chance to win prizes! We know you take a lot of surveys, but it’s because we want to be able to serve you better. The Healthy Minds Study (HMS) is a national online survey assessing student mental health and service utilization on college campuses. The confidential information provided from this study reflects students’ day-to-day experiences on campus and provides insight into both your struggles and successes. This knowledge will be used to inform policy, practice, programs and services on campus, thus bettering student life. All students will be receiving emails with information on how to participate in this study, including access to the link for the survey! The survey will be available to students through May 7.

But wait! There’s an incentive: Participating in this study will make you eligible for one of four $10 Starbucks gift cards donated by Sodexo. After completing the survey, students also will be entered into a national sweepstakes for one of 10 $100 prizes and one of two $500 prizes.

Ask a Golden Knight Guide: The Golden Knight Guide program is a mentorship program to support first-year students. During “Ask a Golden Knight Guide,” students can jump on a Zoom session from 2 to 3 p.m. on Tuesdays, and the Zoom will be staffed by Student Development mentors who can offer guidance, help students explore College resources, and offer a chance for students to meet other students with the same questions.

Volunteer opportunity: Do you have a few hours to volunteer between now and August? Dr. Julienne Cuccio Slichko, assistant professor of literacy and special education, is looking for volunteers to help promote, organize, and work on The RIDE 4 Autism. Proceeds of this event are going to the Friday Knights program at Saint Rose for kids on the autism spectrum. The motorcycle ride/BBQ fundraiser takes place on Saturday, August 21. You don’t have to ride a motorcycle to participate, and you do not have to attend the event to volunteer. To volunteer, you can sign up online. Email Dr. Slichko at slichkoj@strose.edu if you have questions. Why help? Last year, the ride raised $4,000 for Friday Knights.

Academics

via GIPHY

Consider summer courses at Saint Rose: If you’re falling behind or want to get ahead, consider picking up a summer course or two at Saint Rose. Most offerings are online, and there’s a discount on summer undergraduate courses. You can see what’s being offered and read about why you may want to take a summer course on the website.

Honors Convocation: This year Honors Convocation, which recognizes students who have demonstrated distinguished academic achievement, is being celebrated through live virtual ceremonies for each of our four schools. Those receiving honors were invited and supplied with the event link via email. Honorees in the Huether School of Business and School of Mathematics and Sciences were honored last Friday, April 23. This week, we’ll host two virtual ceremonies:

School of Arts and Humanities: Friday, April 30, at 5:30 p.m.
Thelma P. Lally School of Education: Friday, April 30, at 7 p.m.

The recordings of the events and a list of the honorees will be posted in early May.

Online course registration is open! Students are allowed to add/drop classes on their own for each term up until the specific add/drop deadlines for each term. Please see the Academic Calendar on our website for those dates.

Too early to think about finals? Not really. It might be a little early, but planning and preparation lead to success. Take a look at the Spring 2021 Final Exam schedule posted on our website so you understand what the schedule looks like.

Course listings are out! Here’s your reminder that course listings are now available on the website. One thing to keep in mind: The goal for Fall 2021 is to have as much in-person instruction as possible, with the exception of courses/programs that were originally designed to be delivered online. Some courses have been listed as hybrid to make sure there is an in-person component given current social-distancing requirements and therefore room-capacity limits. New CDC guidance for P-12 schools suggests 3 feet of social distance is adequate to guard against the spread of COVID. If those same guidelines are recommended for higher education, it would allow more in-person opportunities for those courses currently listed as hybrid. We will keep you posted on how this evolves.

Find a buddy for when you study: Speaking of how incredible the Navigate app is, you can use it to find a study buddy for your courses. The process is simple:

  • Go to Study Buddies in the Navigate menu.
  • Select the classes where you want to connect with a Study Buddy.
  • If another student in the class has indicated they want a Study Buddy, too, their name will appear. If no one shows up, keep checking back.
  • You can email whoever has said they’re looking for a Buddy right from the app and arrange a time to meet (either masked and socially distanced in person or online).
  • Follow these tips for Study Buddy success: Choose the right platform for your needs (Zoom, etc.), set an agenda, rotate and share responsibilities, and set regular meetings throughout the semester.

Study stops: If you’re commuting to campus and need a place to take a class or study between on-campus classes, we’ve once again designated rooms throughout campus as Study Stops. Just be sure to follow social distancing measures and use headphones if you’re taking a class.

Woohoo!

Congrats to Annie Scherer ’20! Annie Scherer ’20, a music industry alum, was voted Best Local Performer in the Times Union’s annual Best Of section. Regarding her award, the Albany newspaper, wrote “Four years out of high school what were you doing? No matter, Scherer is sure to put you to shame. A classically trained pianist and trumpet player who also is an indie/pop singer-songwriter creating EPs and albums with Nashville producers.”

Last week to check out the Senior Exhibition: The Esther Massry Gallery is presenting the Class of 2021 Art & Design Senior Exhibition through Saturday, May 1. The exhibition features work by 18 students in the NASAD-accredited studio art, graphic design, and design media arts programs. The artists, who worked especially hard through the pandemic, are Yousef Abdelmagid, Griffin Bengraff, Taylor Bock, Isabella Burnett, Jude Daigneault, Evan Delgado, Allyson DeRusso, Victoria Dillman, Hannah Jackson, Matthew Law, Tien Le, Demi McNulty, Goodness Okoro, Sarah Sampson, Kaylee Sterns, Meghan Tomisman, Rosina Torres, and Christian Wechgelaer. Check out the gallery website for admission details. View the show virtually on the exhibition website.

In-person (socially distanced) outdoor yoga is back! Free outdoor yoga classes take place Mondays at 7 p.m. outside the Interfaith Sanctuary. Just bring a mask and a mat! Be sure to pre-register for yoga at this link.

Show love, vax up! As noted in the weekly COVID-19 update by Mark Parisi, director of counseling and health services, we’re encouraging all students to get the vaccine. The Albany Armory contacted the College last week to inform us they have many appointments available, so if you are looking for an appointment, you may wish to start with that site, which lists additional locations, too.

Keep in mind the following:

  • If you are 16 years of age or older, you are able to be vaccinated with the Pfizer vaccine, so be sure to check which vaccine the site is providing.
  • If you are 18 years of age or older, you can receive the Moderna.
  • The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are a two-dose vaccine and you will be required to return to the same vaccination center within the timeframe specified by that center to receive the second dose.
  • Out-of-state students are able to be vaccinated in New York. They just have to show their college ID to show they are students here. Just be mindful of the time necessary between the two doses for the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines and plan accordingly so you are able to receive both doses before leaving New York for home or are able to return for it.

New support groups: The Counseling and Psychological Services Center is pleased to announce the availability of group counseling this semester. Our center is offering four pandemic support groups and a BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and people of color) support group via Zoom.

  • Pandemic: Mondays (2 p.m.), Tuesdays (4:30 p.m.), Wednesdays (11 a.m.), Fridays (2 p.m.)
  • BIPOC: Thursdays at 5 p.m.

If you are interested in joining one of the groups or just have questions, please call our center at 518.454.5200 or email us at counseling@strose.edu.

Help with substance abuse: The Counseling and Psychological Services Center says that with the pandemic, substance abuse is on the rise. Are you struggling but not sure if you’ve crossed the line when it comes to using substances like drugs or alcohol? Check out this guide from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. This flier from the Counseling and Psychological Services Center also explains signs of substance abuse and how to reach out to them to help.
