Professional Experience

Brown was reporter at the Times Union, The Business Review, and The Record, and served as a columnist for the Syracuse Post-Standard. Her work was recognized by both the Associated Press and American City Business Journals. She freelanced for the State Bar News, a publication of the New York State Bar Association.

Teaching Interests

Brown teaches media ethics and introductory and advanced journalism courses, including sports and health journalism. She has worked at Saint Rose since 2005, where she has taught at both the graduate and undergraduate level. Previously, she was a lecturer at Siena College, Skidmore College, the University at Albany, and Sage College.

Research/Creative Works

Brown’s article, “Journalists are Gatekeepers for a Reason,” was published in the Journal of Media Ethics, Volume 33, in 2018. Her chapter “Face to Face with the Facts: The Case of the Disagreeing Sources,” was published in the second edition of “Media Ethics at Work,” edited by Peck & Reel, 2016.

Brown advises the student newspaper, The Chronicle, which was awarded club of the year by the Student Association in 2020. She was recognized as Adviser of the Year in 2014. In addition, Brown is the editor of The Pine Hills blog at, where more than 500 student-produced stories have been published.
