Favorite memory at Saint Rose?
My favorite memories at the college of Saint Rose would have to be the small events posted for us in the courtyard. Jehlani Commander Communications

Hometown: East Orange, New Jersey

Favorite memory at Saint Rose?
My favorite memory at the College of Saint Rose was getting accepted into the BOLD Women’s Leadership Network. I always think back to when I first got the call that I was in, I couldn’t believe it. Little did I know this would change my whole perspective on everything for the better. A true blessing at its finest! Not only did this program help me find my purpose but helped me understand what it means to define my agency as an entrepreneur, creative, and most importantly a black woman in America. As a result, from having a seat next to powerhouse figures, being published in the Times Union Women@Work magazine issue to connecting with some of the most influential players in the fashion world, I have learned that anything is possible. Anything that’s truly meant for you, God will place in your path. All it takes is faith, a dream, and consistency!

What are your future plans?
After graduation, I will be taking part in a fellowship with the worldwide non-profit organization Dress For Success New Orleans. While here I will be serving the position as a Development and People Operations fellow.

The purpose of the organization is to empower women to achieve economic independence by providing a network of support, professional attire, and the development tools to help women thrive in their professional and social life. Providing long-lasting solutions for women so that they not only carry confidence and knowledge they can use to define their life, will help mold the direction in what success means to them.

In the future, I have aspirations to become a fashion creative director and with this comes engaging with clients daily to discuss their needs, organizing team brainstorming sessions, managing a budget, overviewing creative decisions, and producing projects. Specifically, I want to be able to not only cater to the needs of meeting a brand’s identity but also understand what it means to have an impact on working with clients directly to make sure that the individual feels heard and confident in their next steps in life.

By starting small and assisting to help increase expansion at a nonprofit organization, I will be able to explore how I can become an advocate and engage in projects through the skills I acquired from Saint Rose, while at the same time strengthening my skills to incorporate into my clothing brand, “LILWAVE”.
Launched back in 2015, I started LILWAVE and still run it today. LILWAVE is a black-owned unisex apparel brand that stands for Learn, Win, Evolve. I focus on igniting cultural shifts and getting people to feel again in style and quality. I firmly believe that evolution calls for the acceptance of struggle, diversity, and individuality. The world is yours, no matter your place in society so never stop dreaming!

My favorite memory is probably my first in-person competition with the mock trial team in Rochester. It was so much fun getting to compete with and meet teams from all over the country and practice the skills I had been learning and developing for months, both as an attorney and a witness. I will miss my teammates dearly and wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors.

In my first semester at Saint Rose, I had a professor that helped us memorize bites of information by yelling it or gesturing wildly. (I will never forget that Neurons that fire together wire together…) There was also quite a bit of dancing involved. He set my expectations much higher for the rest of my time as a student and I have not been disappointed thus far.

I cannot pick one specific memory but my graduate assistantship with the Community Service and Spiritual Life office was so special. I was given the opportunity to make a difference within the city of Albany and our Saint Rose campus. The students and staff I worked with are wonderful and really made school feel like home. When my supervisor had to retire abruptly, everyone pulled together to continue service projects and keep the office going. It was a great representation of the tight knit community and pride on campus. I was honored to co-lead the Happier Group on campus as well as partner with outside agencies such as the Red Bookshelf and RISSE.

What are your future plans?
I plan to work within the Maryland/Delaware area as a School Psychologist, helping children reach their fullest potential.

My favorite memory at The College of Saint Rose was my last Wind Ensemble concert in December of 2021.  Although I knew this would be my last Wind Ensemble concert, we were not prepared for this concert to be a final performance for the professors. Dr. Hansbrough, our Wind Ensemble director, had worked tirelessly to prepare us for this moment. This was Dr. Hansbrough’s last concert directing the Wind Ensemble. However, he took this performance time to thank other members of the music faculty for their hard work and dedication over the years to make the Music Education program what it was. The entire Wind Ensemble was filled with emotion during this event, as it was not only a farewell for us, but for many of the professors as well. This night was so memorable because of how emotion-filled the performance was. We played with raw emotion and heartbreak, from beginning and end. Although this seems sad, it is the true meaning of music. As an ensemble, each and every one of us connected emotionally to deliver a meaningful performance. The greatest part of this experience is that it is something that nobody can take away from us. We will always have that experience to take with us, no matter where we go.

What are your future plans?
This Fall of 2022, I will attending the Longy School of Music at Bard College for a Masters of Music in Music Education. I hope to begin working as an Instrumental Music Teacher at the Elementary School level, encouraging students to become lifelong musicians and appreciators of music as an art form. As a music educator, I will advocate for each and every one of my students to have equitable access and opportunities to participate in an Instrumental Music program, regardless of socio-economic status or cognitive ability. In the late future, I hope to continue my schooling and enroll in a Doctoral program, studying Educational Leadership to become an administrator. After my experiences at Saint Rose, I am prepared to work as hard as I can to ensure that the students in my care will never have to experience the loss of a music or art program. I am prepared to protect my community from experiencing this loss as well.
I am excited to see what the world has in store for me as I leave Saint Rose as a 2022 Graduate!

I would like to dedicate this portion of my post to my little sister, Jeyni, who is in the photo with me.

Dear Jeyni, I’m sorry that we couldn’t be there for you during your graduation. COVID really messed things up, but just know that we are always rooting for you. You come from a family of creatives, so it’s really no surprise just how successful you’ve been with your pursuit for the arts. I am so proud of you for the things you’ve
accomplished and look forward to see what you do next. Just promise me, that once you’ve become an A-list actor that you’ll still act in a future feature film of mine. You’re my sister, you’re obligated. So… to the little sister doing great things and from the middle sister who loves you the most, my future plan is to continue to watch you grow and to support you in everything that you do because you can do anything. I love you. Good luck!

My favorite memory involving Saint Rose takes place in the spring semester of 2020. I had the privilege and honor of traveling to Southern Ireland with the Saint Rose Chamber Choir, led by Dr. Michael Lister. We toured all across Southern Ireland, performing in cities suck as Cork, Limerick, and more. It was an incredible experience that I will remember fondly for the rest of my life, and I’m so grateful for the prosperous music department at Saint Rose that allowed this experience to be possible. I will always love and be grateful for my music family that I have made in my four years at Saint Rose. Forever priceless, not worthless.

What are your future plans?
I will graduate as one of the last ever classes on music education majors at the College of Saint Rose, and will go on to teach music full time back home in the DMV region.
