Contemporary Art and Education

The Esther Massry Gallery at The College of Saint Rose is a teaching facility that presents contemporary art and culture through its exhibition and visiting artist programs. It provides curriculum support for the art department and invites participation by the greater College community. The gallery is a learning laboratory that serves as a window into the College as an important cultural resource for New York’s Capital Region. It is a member of the American Alliance of Museums, the Exhibit Alliance and Museum Association of New York.

Each academic year, recognized visiting artists at various career levels present exhibitions, lectures, panel discussions, meet with students and provide individual critiques. Gallery receptions provide opportunities for discourse between artists, faculty, students and members of the community.

Chamber music concerts featured an Egyptian mezzo soprano Gala El Hadidi; Makoto Nakura, Marimbist; and COMPOS’ ite, a ensemble of Saint Rose music faculty performing the world premier of CONSTRUCT, composed by Dr. Bruce Roter.

Gallery Management classes present opportunities for involved students to earn credit and learn, and go on to internships and employment in the field. Work study staff positions allow students to hold employment in the gallery. Graphic design students work collaboratively with the director to produce professional publicity materials and signage for exhibitions and events.
