Averie Bowen ’18
B.S. Public Health
Hometown: Pelham, New York
Up next: Travel to Haiti

As the first student to declare in the public health major at Saint Rose, Averie Bowen took on a leadership role, informing new students about the degree and recruiting those who might be interested. She has helped pave the way for a program that is increasingly valuable to society – and proving a big draw for incoming Saint Rose students.

Bowen, who is interested in global health, declared a major in public health as soon as she heard it was available. She spent spring semester of her junior year studying the health care system in Morocco, shadowing doctors and nurses at a hospital and observing the workings of a maternity ward.

Bowen also brought her global concerns back to campus. A standout member of the Saint Rose women’s tennis team, she used a grant from the United States Tennis Association to buy tennis equipment so she could teach some local refugees how to play.

Before moving forward in her field, she plans a look back at her own family history. Bowen will travel to Haiti, her mother’s home country.

“I’m going to miss her in the classroom and also on a personal level because no matter what we’re talking about it’s exciting and interesting!” – Professor Stephanie Bennett-Knapp, coordinator of the Public Health program.
