1. Do I have to make an appointment?

We want to ensure that you have quality, one-on-one time with a tutor to improve your writing skills. Writing is an individualized process, so this one-on-one attention is absolutely essential. During this time of COVID 19, appointments also help us ensure that we are adhering to social distancing guidelines. See the main page for the Writing Center for our hours.

2. How do I make an appointment?

Use your Navigate app. We are under the care unit ‘Academic Support.’ For a breakdown of how to make an appointment for our various services (in-person, online, and Writing Lab) see the main page for the Writing Center.

3. How long is a tutoring session?

Students sign up for 60-minute appointments. We like to ensure that sessions are not rushed. 60-minute appointments also allow us to account for potential technical issues that occasionally come up during online appointments.

4. What should I bring with me to my appointment?

When you make an appointment (in-person or online), we will ask you to share your paper with our gmail account: writingcenterstrose@gmail.com. Please do this, and also have your prompt handy to share with the tutor.

When coming to an in-person appointment, we ask that you bring a laptop if possible. If you do not have one or do not wish to bring one, we will have one available for you to use.

5. What if I have to cancel an appointment?

This can also be done through your Navigate app. If you have trouble with this, please email us on our writing center gmail: writingcenterstrose@gmail.com. Please make sure to cancel if you cannot make your appointment, as this will free up the spot for another student. If you miss three appointments without informing us, you will need to meet with the Director before being given another appointment.

6. Can I just drop my paper off so it can be corrected?

No. We are not a drop-off proofreading or editing service. Our goal is to help you to become a stronger writer, something that will support your success with future writing, and one of the best ways to develop writing skills is in a one-on-one tutorial session.

7. Will I get an “A” on my paper after visiting the Writing Center?

Writing is a skill that takes time to develop and refine. We cannot guarantee that you will receive a particular grade on a paper, but working with our tutors will help you to strengthen your writing skills.

8. Is the Writing Center only for English majors?

No. The Writing Center tutors work with Saint Rose students in all majors, from first-year through graduate classes.

9. Is the Writing Center free?

Yes. The Writing Center is free-of-charge for all registered Saint Rose students.

10. My professor asked me to go to the Writing Center. I want to show that I did, so can a tutor sign my paper?

Please let us know if your Professor wants proof that you attended your Writing Center Appointment. The Director will contact your Professor.

11. My paper topic is personal, and I’m concerned that a tutor might share information about me.

All tutors sign a Statement of Confidentiality, and the contents of your work are kept confidential. Professors may, however, inquire about whether a student attended a Writing Center session.

12.  Is there a maximum number of appointments I can have in a week?

We have a small staff and a lot of students to serve. Therefore, we ask that you not make more than 3 appointments in a week. The Writing Center Director reserves the right to cancel appointments  if she sees that excessive appointments are being made.
