How Public and Private Partners Can Help Reinvent ‘Places’ in the Capital Region

Making the Capital Region the place to be for work and for play will be the focus of a talk by Ruth M. Mahoney, co-chair of the Capital Region Economic Development Council (CREDC) and market president for KeyBank’s Capital Region market, at The College of Saint Rose at 8 a.m. September 7. (Doors open at 7:30 a.m.) Mahoney will speak about how public-private partnerships can reimagine and reinvent public spaces into communities people will be drawn to and want to call home.

In the prestigious Peter M. Tully Lecture, Mahoney will discuss the opportunity to create Capital Region “places” that delight, inform, and nurture our communities. She will present local success stories that demonstrate our region’s strength and economic potential.

Last year, when Nipper the Dog statues started appearing in downtown Albany, visitors were charmed by how local artists had adorned them with everything from traditional Dutch Delft Blue to psychedelic rainbow hues. Placemaking, a multifaceted approach to urban planning and management, capitalizes on local assets such as art and music to improve the living places we share. Bringing together culture and community, and often drawing attention to social challenges, placemaking can be integral to shaping revitalization efforts.

“Ruth brings a fresh perspective and welcome vitality to the ongoing discussion of placemaking,” said Saint Rose President Carolyn J. Stefanco. “The concept of engaging businesses and public-sector partners to improve our living spaces resonates especially strongly here at Saint Rose, where we champion the use of our gifts to help our neighbors and better our community.”

Mahoney, who leads KeyBank’s economic and community-development efforts in our area, was named 2017 Executive of the Year by the Albany Business Review, and she has received numerous recognitions for her community service, from organizations such as Girls Inc., YWCA, American Red Cross, and Hope House. She became co-chair of the CREDC this past March (succeeding Saint Rose Trustee James J. Barba).
