Tobacco-Free Initiative

Tobacco Free Breathe EasyOn January 1, 2012, The College of Saint Rose campus will be tobacco free. The use of tobacco products of any kind will be prohibited on all College properties, including academic, parking lots and green spaces on the main campus and at satellite facilities such as our Plumeri Sports Complex. Implementing this initiative was not an impulsive decision. A task force of administrative and student representatives from the College and the American Cancer Society have worked for nearly a year to lay out a plan for a smooth transition to a tobacco-free environment. Plans have been laid to support members of the Saint Rose community faced with the challenges of fighting their addiction.

By undertaking this initiative, the College organization joins numerous educational and health care facilities across the state and nation in protecting our students, employees, and visitors from exposure to secondhand smoke. We hope you will take advantage of the resources provided by this website as well as the healthier environment of The College of Saint Rose campus.

The College of Saint Rose recognizes that the use of tobacco products is a health, safety, and environmental hazard for students, employees, visitors and campus facilities. The College is committed to promoting health, wellness, and prevention within its community, as well as providing a healthy learning and working environment for administration, faculty, staff, students, visitors, contractors, and vendors. Research findings show that tobacco use in general, including smoking and breathing secondhand smoke, constitutes a significant health hazard.

For the purpose of this policy, tobacco is defined as any type of tobacco product including, but not limited to, cigarettes (commercial, handmade, or electronic) cigars, cigarillos, pipes, hookahs, oral tobacco (spit and spitless, smokeless, chew, snuff), or any other smoking material or device. All areas of The College of Saint Rose campus are designated as tobacco free. Signs about the policy will be posted appropriately throughout campus and on other properties owned, leased, or rented by the College.

The College will provide concerted programming to educate the community of the policy, and offer accessible cessation programs to administration, faculty, staff and students who wish to quit the use of tobacco products.

Effective implementation of the Tobacco Free Policy depends on the courtesy, respect, and cooperation of the all members of The College of Saint Rose community.
