A SHOWCASE OF MUSICAL OFFERINGS AT THE MASSRY CENTER FOR THE ARTS

ALBANY (August 23, 2010) -- The timeless, joyful music of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band…Yaron Kohlberg, one of Israel’s leading young pianists, teamed with the Capital Region’s outstanding duo parnas… Classical strains by the Saint Rose Camerata…The distinctive, a cappella sound of Lionheart…

All add up to an outstanding fall season of musical offerings at The College of Saint Rose Massry Center for the Arts.

“Premiere Performances III” kicks off with the Saint Rose Camerata performing a concert of Baroque cantatas and sonatas (September 24). October will feature New Orleans in Albany as the Preservation Hall Jazz Band comes to town (October 26), followed by a faculty trio of the Saint Rose Camerata performing a work scored for three masked players (October 29). November finds the Capital Region’s own duo parnas – violinist Madalyn Parnas ’10 and cellist Cicely Parnas – joining Israeli pianist Yaron Kohlberg in a presentation by Renaissance Musical Arts (November 21). The fall concert season ends four weeks later with the acclaimed male a cappella ensemble Lionheart (December 17).

“The Baroque Spirit: Cantatas and Sonatas”

The Saint Rose Camerata, faculty chamber ensemble in residence at The College of Saint Rose, opens its 2010-2011 season with a concert of Baroque cantatas and sonatas. The performance will offer a variety of vocal and instrumental chamber music from the 17th and 18th centuries by Italian, German and English baroque composers including A. Scarlatti, Purcell, Corelli, Bach, Vivaldi and Telemann.

Preservation Hall Jazz Band

The Preservation Hall Jazz Band derives its name from the venerable music venue located in the heart of New Orleans’ French Quarter, founded in 1961 by Allan and Sandra Jaffe. The band (www.preservationhall.com) has traveled worldwide spreading its mission to nurture and perpetuate the art form of New Orleans Jazz. Whether performing at Carnegie Hall or Lincoln Center, for British Royalty or the King of Thailand, the music embodies a joyful, timeless spirit. Preservation Hall performs under the auspices of director, Ben Jaffe, the son of founders Allan and Sandra.

The Saint Rose Camerata
“Vox Balaenae”

A faculty trio of the Saint Rose Camerata will perform Trio for flute, cello and piano by Czech composer Bohuslav Martinu and Vox Baelanae (“Voice of the Whale”) for three masked players (scored for electric flute, electric cello and electric piano) by American composer George Crumb. Performers include Yvonne Chavez Hansbrough, flute; David Bebe, cello; and Young Kim, piano.

Parnas Kohlberg Trio*
Parnas-Kohlberg Trio: Yaron Kohlberg, piano with
Madalyn Parnas, violin & Cicely Parnas, cello
Sunday, November 21, 3 p.m.

Violinist Madalyn Parnas ’10 and cellist Cicely Parnas are gifted young soloists and chamber musicians in their own right. Together, they have collaborated as duo parnas for the last dozen years, capturing first prize in the international chamber music competition at Carnegie Hall. Both former students of The College of Saint Rose, they are presently Artist Diploma students at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music.

Yaron Kohlberg, born in Jerusalem in 1983, is one of Israel's leading young pianists. He is the winner of prestigious international prizes and performs regularly in Israel and abroad. These three charismatic young artists met and immediately began working together while Yaron was on tour in the United States in 2007.

Presented by Renaissance Musical Arts and The College of Saint Rose.

Lionheart*
Lionheart
Friday, December 17, 7:30 p.m.

Lionheart is one of America’s leading ensembles in vocal chamber music, acclaimed for its “smoothly blended and impeccably balanced sound” (Allan Kozinn, The New York Times). Jeffrey Johnson, Lawrence Lipnik, John Olund, Richard Perterfield, Kurt-Owen Richards, and Michael Wenger give voice to medieval, Renaissance and new-music repertoires in concert, on radio and in recordings. This concert will feature selections from their CD Tydings Trew: carols, chants and motets for the Christmas season as it was celebrated in the cloisters, palaces and streets of England in the 15th and 16th centuries.

The concert will be preceded by a lecture/performance.
