Grants, Assistance, and Loans

TEACH Grant

Federal TEACH (Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education) grants provide up to $4,000 per year to students who intend to teach in a public or private school serving low-income students at either the elementary or secondary level. In return for these academically competitive grants, you must teach for at least four academic years within eight calendar years of completing the program of study.Students must be enrolled in a bachelor's or master's degree program. Those enrolled in certification only programs are not eligible.

Math and Science Teacher Scholarships

New York State offers one-year Math and Science Teaching Incentive Scholarships to full-time graduate students pursuing careers in secondary math and science teaching (grades 7–12) in New York State. The scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis and require the completion of a supplement that must be returned to the NYS Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC) on or before March 15th. This program provides awards in exchange for five years of full-time employment as NYS secondary education math or science teachers. In 2007-08, the maximum award was over $4375. Federal Direct Loans

The Unsubsidized Direct Loan is available to graduate students. Graduate students are eligible to borrow up to $20,500 per year. Post Baccalaureate students seeking an Advanced Certificate of Study are eligible for up to $12,500. For the unsubsidized loan, the government does not subsidize the interest on the loan.

Beginning July 1, 2012, the graduate Stafford loan program will become entirely unsubsidized, which means the loan will accrue interest while a student is in school. These changes will not affect the annual and aggregate borrowing limits. The maximum amount a student can borrow will remain at $20,500 per academic year, with a cumulative maximum of $138,500.
