Message to Parents
We realize that sending your student to college is a time of tremendous transition for your family. All students go through an adjustment period and experience many ups and downs while living away from home. There are many resources here on campus available for your student to manage this transition successfully.
Here in Residence Life, our preference is to work directly with the student. This enables us to establish a relationship with your student and helps to get to the crux of the issues more efficiently. We do welcome parent input and questions at any time. Our goal is to provide parents with resources which they can pass on to their students to help themselves.
It is important that students have support and encouragement from home while being allowed to mature through their own experiences. By all means, be there for your student as a sounding board, but let them handle their own problems as much as possible. Your student’s success is dependent upon his or her ability to function independently.
The information on the Residence Life website is provided to parents so that you can be an informed resource for your student.
What are the dimensions of the rooms?
There are only two residence halls that have all the same size rooms: Lima Hall and Brubacher Hall which both house only freshmen students. The other residence halls on campus all vary in their size and shape. You can obtain specific information on the rooms in each residence hall by visiting our section on the Residence Halls.
What furniture is in the room?
The College provides each student with a standard twin bed, desk, chair, closet or wardrobe, and dresser.
Will I have a phone?
There will be one house/floor phone per building for local calls. Students are strongly encouraged to program the number to Security in their cell phone - 518-454-5187.
Are the rooms equipped with cable?
Yes, all student rooms receive Time Warner Cable’s Standard Albany 80 channel line-up.
Is there Internet Access in every room?
Yes, for any student interested in information regarding internet access in their room, call the Office of Information Technology Services at 518-454-2190. Every student has a free e-mail address whether or not they have their own computer.
Can I decorate my room?
Absolutely! Saint Rose encourages students to make their room as comfortable as possible. This is your home away from home, your haven for relaxation, fun and study. Posters, plants, a throw rug, lamps, and pictures are great additions. When you are choosing your personal touches, please keep in mind the room must be returned to its original condition when you move out. For a list of items you may want to consider bringing (and those you should leave behind, go to our Things to Bring/Prohibited Items list). Students are not allowed to build their own lofts or put holes in the walls.
Can a resident have a car on campus?
Resident freshmen students may not have a car on campus. Upper-class students and freshmen commuter students may have a car on campus. Students may purchase parking permits from the Office of Security and Safety located at 340 Western Avenue. A parking permit does not guarantee a parking space on campus. Since we are located in the city of Albany, parking can be scarce. If you need to park on the street, be sure that you are aware of any parking restrictions by noting the signs on the sides of the streets.
Can I bring a furry or feathered friend?
Only if it is inanimate. The health code allows only guide dogs or fish (10 gallon tank maximum) to cohabitate with people in the residence halls. These are the only exceptions.
Are there specific hours when students need to be quiet?
Yes! 11pm – 8am, Sunday – Thursday, and 1am – 9am, Friday and Saturday, it’s time to decrease the decibel level of stereos, radios, TVs, and voices so other students may sleep and study undisturbed. Musical instruments may not be practiced in the residence halls.
Is alcohol allowed on campus?
The College of Saint Rose alcohol policies are consistent with New York State Law. No one under the age of 21 is allowed to possess, consume, or be in the presence of alcoholic beverages while on campus. Students are encouraged to read the guidelines in the Student Handbook available on the Saint Rose web page. Drinking is not allowed in the presence of an underage student. Saint Rose hopes that these policies will help promote safety and security and create a positive living environment.
What happens when a rule or policy is violated?
Violations are taken very seriously and will lead to disciplinary action. If found in violation of a rule or policy, a student may receive sanctions involving monetary fines, educational sanctions, and/or community service through the Student Conduct Process.
Do I have to have a meal plan?
Yes. A meal plan is required for all resident students except those living in the college-provided apartments. There are 3 meal plans from which students may choose. Students may opt to change their meal plan during the first week of each semester only by coming to the Office of Residence Life.
How do I find out who my roommate(s) are?
You will receive a mailing from the Residence Life office providing your roommate’s name, address and phone number prior to the beginning of the fall semester. It is then up to you to contact your roommate.
What are the Residence Halls like?
Saint Rose is unique, with a variety of living arrangement possibilities. Brubacher Hall is comprised of resident students, classrooms, faculty offices, a computer lab, snack bar and lounge. Lima Hall is a five floor corridor style building. We also have a four floor, suite style building – Alumni Hall – in which 6 students share a bathroom, common area, and three bedrooms. The remainder of the campus is comprised of Victorian style buildings that house from 6 to 42 students. More information on individual residence halls can be found on our Residence Hall Section.
How are the buildings staffed?
Each floor in Brubacher has 3 or 4 Resident Assistants (RAs). There is one RA on each floor of Lima Hall and 2 RAs in Alumni Hall. Additionally, there is at least 1 RA on the premises of most houses. RAs are graduate and undergraduate students responsible for fostering an atmosphere of academic, social, and personal growth. They provide opportunities for educational programming and community building in addition to handling maintenance problems and/or requests. The Resident Assistants are supervised by the Area Coordinators.
How are student room assignments made?
Room assignments are made based on the date that a student has paid their room and board deposit and when we receive your Occupancy Agreement. Priority is given to students whose deposit is received before May 1st. The Occupancy Agreement asks you to answer a few questions that we will use to pair you up with your roommate(s) for the upcoming academic year. Students are assigned to Lima or Brubacher randomly.
Can I request a roommate?
While we do not encourage students to request a roommate, we know that some students do feel comfortable living with someone they already know. We do allow roommate requests to be made in writing. This must be a reciprocal request made by all students involved. We will do our best to honor the request, but cannot make any guarantees. For students who confirm a roommate request in the MyHousing System, this request will take priority over any building preferences completed through the Occupancy Agreement.
Can I request a specific building (Lima or Brubacher)?
While the office of Residence Life does not take specific Building Requests, we ask students you to indicate their building preferences from highest to lowest of the buildings they would be interested in living in. The Residence Life Office will work during the housing placement process to assign students to a space that meets these preferences, based on the availability of rooms in each building and the student's date of deposit.
Please be aware that the Residence Life Office will honor confirmed Roommate Requests over building preferences. If a confirmed roommate request is on file, the Residence Life Office will honor all confirmed roommate requests before moving to work with student building preferences.
Are the residence halls locked 24 hours a day, 7 days a week?
Yes, all residence halls are locked throughout the day. Entry into your residence hall requires using your ID card.
What if I have a special housing need?
If you have a need that requires special housing, you should fill out the Special Housing Request Application and send that form on to Residence Life. You will also need to register with the Office of Services for Students with Disabilities.
Can I loft/bunk my bed?
There are a number of rooms across campus that have lofted or bunked beds. Due to the limited pieces of furniture that we have, these are the only beds that can be lofted or bunked. However, most of our beds do have the option to be raised or lowered depending on their current setting. You can talk to your RA about what options you might have.
What appliances can I bring?
Students residing in Lima and Brubacher can have 1 microwave and 1 refrigerator per room. Students in the upper-class houses may only have 1 refrigerator per room. You will want to coordinate with your roommate as to who will be bringing what items. We encourage you to look at our Things to Bring/Prohibited Items list for additional ideas.
Is there extra storage space in my residence hall?
Our residence halls do not provide for storage facilities outside of a student’s room. Therefore, any items you are planning on keeping must be able to fit in your room. Keep in mind that you need to share your room with your roommates so you may want to think carefully about what items you really need and what you might be able to bring back during a break period.
Where do I do laundry and how much does it cost?
All residence halls (not on-campus apartments) have laundry facilities. Students are able to use the washers and dryers at no cost, however, you must provide your own detergent and fabric softener.
Where do I get my mail?
All resident students have a mailbox assigned to them that you will keep so long as you live on campus. The mailboxes are located in the ground level of the Events and Athletics Center. It is a student’s responsibility to check your mailbox on a daily basis as you will receive important on-campus mail in your box as well as any mail from off-campus. I need to return to campus early from a break (summer, intersession, spring) or stay for a break. What do I do?
For students who need to return to campus earlier than the typical opening of the residence halls, you should contact the Office of Residence Life with your reason for return. For the intersession and spring breaks, there will be paperwork that you will need to fill out for this request. For students who need to stay during a break, paperwork is available in the Office of Residence Life typically 2 weeks before the break begins and is due 1 week before the break starts. You will be notified in either case if you are able to return early or stay. Please note: No one is able to stay on campus during the Thanksgiving Break.
I have a maintenance request for my room. How do I get it fixed?
If it is a non-emergency situation, you should contact the Office of Residence Life between the hours of 8:30am – 4:30pm Monday through Friday and report the request. You can also find your RA and ask them to report it. If the request is an emergency, Monday through Friday from 8:30am – 4:30pm you can contact the Office of Residence Life; if it is after hours, you should call Security at ext. 5187 or by using the Security button on your phone.
I have lost my keys. What should I do?
If you believe that you have lost your keys and you are unable to find them, you should contact the Office of Residence Life or the Office of Security and Safety so that we can work to have a new key issued to you. There is a fine for lost keys that you will need to pay when you pick up your new key at the Office of Security and Safety located at 340 Western Avenue.
I have locked myself out of my room. What should I do?
First, you should try and find your RA or another RA in your building (if there is more than one) who can help let you into your room. If you are unable to find an RA, you should contact Security at ext. 5187 and they will send either a staff member to help you.
Can I leave my belongings in my room over the summer?
We cannot allow students to leave their belongings in the residence halls over the summer break. The summer is the time when there is a great deal of work being done in the residence halls as well as groups coming to campus as part of conferences. We are not aware on a day to day basis of who is in and out of the buildings and therefore cannot take responsibility for your belongings.
Now that I have moved into my room, I am not happy with it. Can I change rooms?
The Office of Residence Life does offer a room change process for students who are looking to change rooms. Students must come to the office and fill out a wait list application. We cannot guarantee that we will be able to offer you a different room – it will all depend on what spaces are available at that time. We will hold your request through the current semester in the event something else opens up. Please note that at the start of each semester there is a 3 week room freeze when no changes can be made.
What can be done if my roommate and I don’t get along?
When you first get your roommate’s contact information, you should reach out to them and talk to them about their likes and dislikes as well as your expectations for your living environment. However, we know that not all roommate pairings are the best matches. You should first work with your RA to establish a Roommate Agreement that each resident can agree to live by. If this doesn’t work, you should speak with the Area Coordinator who will have a mediation with you and your roommate. If, after these steps, it does not appear that a compromise can be met, you can fill out a Wait List Application to change rooms. We will do our best to honor the request as soon as we can, however, we are limited by the spaces open at that time. You may need to wait a period of time before this move can happen, therefore, keeping the lines of communication open between you and your roommate is extremely important. Please note: We will NEVER force another student to move out of a room. If you are uncomfortable in the living arrangement, you will need to be the one to move.
How long before a wait list request is satisfied?
This all depends on how many other students have requested different rooms ahead of you and how many available spaces there are. We will do our best to offer spaces to students as quickly as possible, but there will likely be a waiting period.
I would prefer to live off-campus (either in an apartment or at home). What do I need to do if I am currently living on-campus?
You will need to come to the Office of Residence Life and fill out a Withdrawal Form indicating that you are withdrawing from housing. This form becomes effective based on the date that you enter on it. This will NOT withdraw you from classes. If you need to withdraw from your classes as well, you need to visit the Student Solution Center in St. Joseph’s Hall.
My roommate just moved out and I have a friend I would like to move in with me. Can they do that?
We are always more than happy to work with students in this situation. These requests all must go through your Area Coordinator. No moves may take place prior to receiving his or her approval. In the event that we learn a student has moved without our permission, you will be documented and go through the Student Conduct Process; you may also be required to move your belongings back to your original room. Please note: There is a room freeze which occurs during the first 3 weeks of the semester – no room changes may take place during that time.
How do I select housing for next year?
All resident students will receive information in the spring semester regarding the Room Reservation process. Students are required to pay a deposit to the Bursar’s Office in order to participate in the Room Reservation process. Through this process, students have the opportunity to select their own room where there is space. We encourage students to have many options when they go to select their room for next year in the event that their first choice has already been selected.
