The Mathematics Program

The mathematics program at The College of Saint Rose will provide you with the knowledge and skills that you need to be competitive in our highly technological society. Now, more than ever, it is important that you have the ability to understand and interpret technology. The mathematics program at Saint Rose will make you a marketable commodity by providing you with knowledge and experiences in a variety of areas including algebra, geometry, computer science and physics, enabling you to enter a career where you will confidently put your abilities into practice.

Program Options

When you study math at The College of Saint Rose, you have a variety of program options. You may:

  • Major in mathematics; 
  • Major in mathematics 7-12 secondary education; or 
  • Major in any one of a variety of interdisciplinary study programs involving mathematics, including the business/ mathematics option, the physical science/mathematics option or the computer sciences/mathematics option.

Our Mentoring Faculty

The Mathematics Department at The College of Saint Rose is characterized by a concerned and dedicated faculty that builds mentoring relationships with students through small class sizes. Our faculty members belong to several professional organizations including the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, Mathematical Association of America, Association of Women in Mathematics, American Mathematical Society, Association of Mathematics Teachers of New York State, American Educational Research Association, and the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators.

Facilities: Computerized Math Classroom

The Mathematics Department prides itself on being at the forefront of mathematics education and the use of technology in teaching mathematics. The College’s computerized mathematics classrooms are equipped with the type of technology and software that you will likely see in graduate school or in the workplace after graduation. Students may use this facility for study or preparation of homework assignments when no classes are in session.

Mathematics Tutoring

If you are struggling with a complex mathematical problem or a simple mathematical concept, you will find the support that you need at the College’s Academic Support Center (ASC). This facility is staffed by students who may have wrestled with the same concepts at one time or another. Visits to the ASC are free and assistance is offered at convenient hours. Tutorials on computer are available for student practice or review . A tutoring position in the ASC also is a job opportunity for some students. If you enjoy helping others and are deemed eligible for a tutoring position, you may consider applying for a position in the ASC.

BA in Mathematics

When you graduate from Saint Rose with a degree in mathematics you will have a wide range of professional career choices, and, because of the pervasive nature of mathematics, you will be prepared for employment in industry, government, or financial fields. If you can see yourself as a businessperson, cost estimator, banker, statistician, actuary, computer systems analyst, or engineer, then the Saint Rose mathematics program is right for you.

Courses in various levels of Calculus, different types of Algebra, Probability and Statistics, Computer Programming, and Geometry, among many others, will prepare you for graduate school and/or careers in many areas.

All students are encouraged to complete an internship tailored to their specific interests in mathematics.

BA in Mathematics: Adolescence Education

Field Experiences and Career Opportunities

Mathematics: Adolescence Education qualifies students for initial certification by New York State to teach mathematics in grades 7 through 12. The College of Saint Rose boasts a better than 96% pass rate among its students on the New York State Teacher Certification Examinations. These students take a full Mathematics program as they prepare for the demands of the classroom and graduate school.

As a culminating portion of their program, they complete a required, full-semester student teaching assignment. Prior to that experience, students in this program participate in a variety of in-school observations, participation, and teaching in a variety of settings to increase their competency in teaching and to prepare for a smooth transition to the student teaching semester.

Students in this program are encouraged to participate in local and regional conferences for Mathematics teachers, to investigate available resources for mathematic teaching, and to volunteer to tutor disadvantaged students .

Our Mathematics: Adolescence Education graduates have accepted a variety of teaching jobs—from seventh-grade classes to algebra to advanced placement calculus.

Graduate Study

Our math graduates are well prepared for advanced study in mathematics, medicine, chemistry, law and accounting and have been accepted to graduate programs at a variety of institutions, including Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, the University of Minnesota, and Boston University. Mathematics 7-12 education graduates must complete a master’s degree within five years of teaching under certification.

The Mathematics Faculty

The Mathematics faculty at the College have expertise in many different fields of mathematics. From mathematics for fulfillment of Liberal Education requirements to modern algebra, from mathematics for elementary education majors to topology, members of the faculty share their interest and love of the field with their students.
