The College of Saint Rose Summer Jazz Program is beginning its twenty-fourth season of providing rehearsal and performance opportunities for area high school and middle school musicians. Running from June 29 until August 6, the program is comprised of two jazz ensembles. One band is for students who will be entering grades 7-9 in the fall. The other band is for students going into grades 10-12. Both bands meet every Tuesday and Thursday evening from 6-8 PM. Public concerts will be presented on Sunday July 18 at 7:00 PM and on Saturday August 7 at 2:00 PM.

The Saint Rose Summer Jazz Program gives area school musicians an opportunity to continue developing their musicianship throughout the summer and provides them with valuable performance opportunities. They will be rehearsing and performing with other student musicians who enjoy music so much that they don’t want to neglect their performance skills during the summer. Our combination of rehearsals and performances ensure that their musical skills will continue to improve. Ensemble members do not have to participate for the entire six weeks. Many of our participants leave at various points throughout the summer for vacations and to take part in other activities.

New……Coming Summer 2010!

This year, Saint Rose Summer Jazz participants will have an additional opportunity to further their knowledge of and appreciation for jazz, America’s only original art form! One of our summer conductors, Mr. Matthew Cremisio, will conduct a weekly jazz master class from 5:00-5:45. The Tuesday class will be for rhythm section players and the Thursday class will be for wind players. The classes will cover many different topics related to jazz including: jazz historical styles, jazz articulation and performance practices, jazz listening skills, improvisation and jazz history.

The Summer Jazz Program takes place in the College’s Massry Center for the Arts. Located at 1002 Madison Avenue in Albany, NY, the sparkling new Massry Center features the 400-seat Kathleen McManus Picotte Recital Hall with its superior acoustics, Esther Massry Art Gallery, choral and instrumental rehearsal rooms, teaching studios, piano labs and classrooms.
