Upsilon Iota Induction Ceremony--2011
This honors ceremony was held on Thursday, April 14th 2011, from 6-8pm in the Touhey Forum in the Lally School at The College of Saint Rose. The program followed the rules of induction set forth by the National Communication Association's Lambda Pi Eta.


The Sister Patricia Kane Writing Award in Journalism

Patricia Kane SSJThe Communications Department was certified in 1981 under the leadership of Sister Patricia Kane SSJ who started teaching at the college in the 1970s. The award was established in 2009.

This honor is awarded to a Communications major or minor for an original piece of print journalism or magazine writing produced for a class offered by the Communications Department. Members of the department choose the winning entry based on the author's ability to capture the reader's attention and provide an accurate and compelling story. Department faculty assess entries and vote on the recipient.

Bobbie is a Public Communications major graduating in May 2011. She is a native of Brentwood, Long Island, but now calls Albany home. She earned a TV and Radio Broadcasting degree and a Liberal Arts degree from SUNY Adirondack in 2008 and 2009. She is a Veteran of the Marine Corps where she served as a Sergeant from 1998-2002. She is a contributing writer to the Saint Rose Chronicle, is a member of Upsilon Iota, the Communications Honor Society, and Tau Sigma, the National Transfer Student Honor Society. After graduating from Saint Rose, Bobbie plans to continue working at the Veterans Administration to help Veterans in the health care system. Eventually, Bobbie hopes to work for the Veterans Administration in their Public Affairs division.



Teresa Farrell ~ 2010

Teresa is an English and Communications major with a Writing minor. She is a native of New York Mills, NY and graduated from New York Mills High school in 2007. She is the Managing Editor of the Chronicle and a member of Upsilon Iota, the Communications Honor Society, and Sigma Tau Delta, the English Honor Society, at Saint Rose. After graduating from St. Rose in Spring 2011 Teresa plans to become a travel/magazine writer. 

Kyle Derkowski ~ 2009

Kyle is a double major in Communications and Computer Science. After graduation he plans to further his studies by attending graduate school. Kyle is a native of the Capital Region, graduating from Schalmont High School in 2005. Kyle enjoys all aspects of the Communications field.

Dan Grskovic ~ 2008
Dan Grskovic is the winner of the first Annual Sister Patricia Kane Writing Award in Journalism in 2008. His award winning article is entitled A Hustler's Ambition. Born and raised in Queens, New York, Dan graduated from Holy Cross High School in Flushing, Queens in the top 10 percent of his class in 2004.

Kate CoreyKatelyn Corey (2009) is the Promotions Producer at the Albany NBC-affiliate, News Channel 13 (WNYT). Kate develops, maintains and reinforces the station's image by creating promotions for it. Kate began her professional career post college at ABC-affiliate WTEN where she worked first as a freelance videographer, then moved to commercial production work. She has shot and edited informational and promotional videos for a range of community service clients as well. Her future goals include working in production at a national level, focusing on commercial production and documentaries. During her time at Saint Rose, Kate was Vice President of Upsilon Iota, the Communications Department Honor Society.
