Benjamin Min Han

Benjamin Min Han is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Cinema Studies at New York University. He received his B.S. in Radio-TV-Film from the University of Texas at Austin and his M.A. in Critical Studies from the University of Southern California. His dissertation tentatively titled “Variety on the Small Screen: A Cultural History of Asian and Latino/a Performers on Television” is a multicultural project that examines the migration of Asian and Latino/a performers to television from the 1950s to 1970s. More specifically, it explores the intersection of race, music and variety shows, situating their transnational relationship within the shifting Cold War geopolitics between Asia, Latin America, and the United States.

His research has been supported by the Peabody/Lamdin Kay Research Grant, the NYU Council for Media and Culture Summer Research Grant, and the UNLV Gaming Research Fellowship. He has served as a feature film selection committee member for the Asian American International Film Festival in New York, and co-organized and moderated the event “Try to Remember: A Night of the Kim Sisters” at The Korea Society.
