Makoto Nakura's program is inspired by the artist Larry Poons (b. 1937) whose large-scale, abstract paintings will be on exhibit during the performance and through Sunday, March 21, 2010. This event is co-sponsored by the Esther Massry Gallery and Premiere Performances at the Massry Center for the Arts.

Makoto NakuraMakoto Nakura is a musician whose artistry and astonishing virtuosity have been mesmerizing audiences for two decades with his innovative programs of new music as well as traditional classical repertoire. For this presentation Makoto Nakura will perform a program inspired by the artist Larry Poons (b.1937) in the Esther Massry Gallery surrounded by an exhibition of Poons’ paintings.

Mokoto Nakura's critically praised performances around the world include venues in London, Rome, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Seoul and Ho Chi Minh City. In the United States, he has performed with the New York Chamber Symphony, the Chicago Sinfonietta and the California Symphony. As a recital soloist, his appearances include the Weill Recital Hall at New York’s Carnegie Hall, New York’s 92nd Street Y and the Kennedy Center in Washington. He has been a guest artist with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and Spoleto USA Festival. Nakura has received many honors and was recently named an associate of the Royal Academy of Music in London.

Mokoto Nakura has established himself as a dedicated champion of the music of our time, and many leading young composers have written pieces for him. It is his mission to explore and expand the possibilities of the marimba and to demonstrate the exciting and provocative vehicle it offers to composers and the thrilling experience it presents for audiences.
