Gallery Management/Work Study Students Spring 2009

Gallery Management

Gallery Mangement is a two-credit course open to any student who has an interest in hands-on learning in the gallery. Students design and install exhibitions, work alongside visiting artists, plan and host receptions, and learn behind-the-scenes operations in a community atmosphere. Students can opt to repeat the course each semester as the experience changes with the schedule and exhibitions. Many have gone on to employment at institutions including the Albany Institute of History and Art, the New York State Museum, University Art Msueum at The State University of New York, Hyde Collection and Guggenheim Museum of Art.

Work Study

Gallery Management Work Study MeetingPositions are available each year for students who qualify for the Federal Work Study program. This may be part of your financial aid package. Interested students should be aware of the deadlines for financial aid and be sure to indicate your interest in receiving Work Study. You can contact The Office of Financial Aid for more information. If you have received notice that you are qualified, then please contact the gallery director to schedule an interview.

Each year, graphic design faculty recommend selected senior graphic design students who are then invited by the gallery director to work as interns for the Esther Massry Gallery. This dynamic involvement furthers the academic mission of the "Teaching Gallery" and it highlights the superior quality of the graphic design program. This arrangement can be implemented through Gallery Management for credit, Work Study (if qualified) or as a Volunteer. One or more students are chosen to design graphic elements for visiting artist, faculty, student and alumni exhibitions. These often include invitations, posters, text walls, text panels, exhibit checklists and signage that document the variety of shows and events held in the gallery. This is a professional experience and students are able to have their work published for their portfolio and for a real client, the Esther Massry Gallery.
