Summer Academy - Performing Arts

 

Theater MasksPerforming Arts

Week 4: July 21–25
Parents are invited to attend the last class for a presentation of student work.

Stage Combat:
9 am–Noon

This course will examine the preparation and caution necessary to create engaging and realistic stage action such as fight sequences, pratfalls, and physical comedy. Students will learn how to perform these actions with the safety of themselves and others in mind. The class will conclude with a presentation for parents, friends, and family.

Acting Skills - Scene Study: 9 am–Noon
Student actors will work in pairs or small groups analyzing a scene for character, emotion, and conflict. To help the actor listen and react honestly, we define a character’s “want”; find real moments, emotions, and transitions; use sensory work, physicality, and setting. Students will be involved in a mixture of scene work, improvisation, monologues, and cold readings.

Acting Styles - Greek Myths and Masks :
New 9 am–Noon

This program combines Greek mythology and its use of masks in performance. Students will create masks and perform short plays based on ancient myths. Actors will explore character work through vocal and movement activities as well as improvisations to create their scenes.

Acting Skills - Audition+Character Development:
New1–4 pm

Students will work to develop two distinctly different characters through the use of monologues. Work will focus on developing the character's history, moment before, internal struggle, and physical characteristics and actions. In addition to prepared monologue work, students will also work with cold readings to learn the art of auditioning through instant character development.

Make-up Design:
1–4 pm

Students will learn the basics of theatrical make-up design through hands-on experience and application. Learn shadow and age techniques, as well as bruises, scars and other theatrical make-up skills.

Acting Styles - Comedy:
1–4 pm

Learn how to structure material, prepare delivery, work with audience response, and create in the world of comedy. Students will work on comedic style and timing by performing improvised scenes and situations. The class will conclude with a presentation for parents, friends, and family.
