The Society for Human Resource Management
The SHRM® Learning System is a training program that further develops ones HR knowledge and assists individuals in preparing for the Professional in Human Resources (PHR) or Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) certification exams.

SHRM® — Spring 2008
12 Weeks
Thursdays Beginning January 24
6:00 - 9:15 pm

The SHRM® Learning is comprised of six separate modules covering the functional areas of HR Management.

  1. Strategic Management
    The role of human resources in organizations; the strategic planning process; scanning the external environment; organizational structure and internal HR partners; measuring effectiveness; ethical issues and the legislative environment.
  2. Workforce Planning and Employment
    Key legislation affecting employee rights, privacy and consumer protection; Equal Employment Opportunity/Affirmative Action; gender discrimination and harassment in the workplace; organizational staffing requirements; job analysis and documentation; recruitment; flexible staffing; selection; employment practices; organizational exit and employee records management.
  3. Human Resource Development
    HR development and the organization; adult learning and motivation; assessment of HRD needs, HRD program design, development and implementation; evaluating HRD effectiveness; career development; developing leaders; organizational development initiatives and performance management.
  4. Compensation and Benefits
    Total compensation and the strategic focus of the organization; pay administration; compensation systems; introduction to benefit programs; government-mandated benefits; voluntary benefits; compensation and benefit programs for international employees and evaluating the total compensation system and communicating it to employees.
  5. Employee and Labor Relations
    Employee relations and organizational culture; employee involvement strategies; positive employee relations; work rules in union and nonunion environments; effective communication of laws, regulations, and organizational policies; discipline and formal complaint resolution; union organizing; unfair labor practices; collective bargaining; strikes and secondary boycotts; public-sector labor relations and international employee and labor relations.
  6. Occupational Health, Safety and Security
    Safety; health; security issues.
This program is designed for:
  • HR professionals preparing for the HRCI certification exams.
  • HR professionals seeking a broad overview of human resource management.
  • HR specialists desiring an in-depth understanding of human resource management.
  • Individuals interested in pursuing the human resources field and networking with other human resource professionals.

Professional in Human Resources (PHR)
To earn the Professional in Human Resources (PHR) designation you must have:

  • two years of professional HR exempt-level experience, and
  • pass a comprehensive exam.
  • The Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI) highly recommends that candidates attempting the PHR exam have 2-4 years of HR exempt-level experience.
  • Students/recent graduates will be allowed to take the exam one year prior or up to one year after their graduation date. Students with an undergraduate or graduate degree will have five years from the time they pass the exam to obtain the required two years of HR exempt-level experience. Only then will they be certified.

Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR)
To earn the Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) designation you must have:

  • two years of professional HR exempt-level experience, and
  • pass a comprehensive exam.

The HRCI strongly recommends that candidates attempting the SPHR exam have 6-8 years of HR exempt-level experience.

Registration Fees
$850 - Fee includes the SHRM® Learning system and accompanying software.
This fee does not cover the cost of exam registration.

The Society for Human Resource Management has developed the SHRM® Learning System: An overview of Human Resource Management. The SHRM® Learning System is a training program that further develops your HR knowledge and assists you in preparing for the Professional in Human Resources (PHR) or Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) certification exams. The College of Saint Rose now offers a thirty-three hour (3.3 CEU’s), instructor-led version of the SHRM® Learning System. This system will enable you to increase your knowledge of critical HR issues and to network with other HR professionals.
