  Interdepartmental Studies

By definition, a major in Interdepartmental Studies combines course work in two or more disciplines. This major provides a flexible framework that allows for the design of a variety of nontraditional programs. Under the umbrella of Interdepartmental Studies, the College has developed several specified options and several less-defined options as described below. The degree in all cases is Bachelor of Arts in Interdepartmental Studies.

PRE-ENGINEERING OPTION
The 3 + 2 program in Engineering allows a student to earn two degrees over a period of five years (depending on course loads): the B.A. in Interdepartmental Studies from The College of Saint Rose and a B.S. in Engineering from an affiliated college. Under this affiliation, each college accepts course work from the other college, leading to the awarding of two degrees. Students in this program complete a three-year program at Saint Rose including liberal arts courses and prerequisite courses in the sciences and mathematics, including CHM 101, 102, CIS 111, 202; MAT 190, 191, 201, 240, 302; PHY 101, 102. Also recommended are CHM 203, 402, 403, and MAT 373, 373.

Presuming satisfactory course work and a satisfactory minimum cumulative index, students proceed to a participating school of engineering. After successful completion of 30 credits in engineering, students are awarded the BA in Interdepartmental Studies from Saint Rose. Following additional course work in engineering, students receive a BS in Engineering from the participating school of engineering according to the policies of that college. Students interested in this program should consult the Office of Undergraduate Admissions or the School of Mathematics and Sciences.

PROFESSIONAL STUDIES OPTION—42 credits
Professional Studies is a nontraditional option that includes portfolio credit for professional experience and learning as one component of Interdepartmental Studies. The other component is a minor or cluster of courses from an appropriate discipline. Portfolio credit accepted under the heading of Professional Studies cannot be applied to any degree other than the BA in Interdepartmental Studies: concentration in Professional Studies. The design of the major includes: 18-24 credits in professional studies awarded through the portfolio
process and 18-24 credits in an appropriate discipline such as Business, Computer Science, Social Sciences, etc. Program advisement and approval are initiated at Graduate and Continuing Education Admissions.

SPECIAL STUDIES OPTION—42 credits
The Special Studies option retains the flexible dimension of the Interdepartmental Studies major. Under this option, students are able to design their own major by combining two clusters of at least 18-24 credits each or three clusters of at least 12-18 credits each. A rationale must be presented establishing the relatedness of selected disciplines, and a coherent progression of study must be demonstrated. This option requires that students have clear personal and academic goals and have documented the exploration of career options. This option is particularly suitable to students interested in earning credit through experiential learning. Program approval is required by the academic advisor and by the Dean of Graduate and Continuing Education Admissions.
