Student Teaching HandbooksSpecial Education Student Teaching Guidebook Mandatory application meetings for student teaching will be held at the beginning of the semester before the semester you plan on doing your student teaching. During this meeting, guest speakers will address topics including resumes, job fairs, academic requirements for eligibility for student teaching, field experience and contact hours, as well as fingerprinting. Applications for student teaching will be distributed and collected at the student teaching meetings; bring a pen and your student ID number. Student teaching is an extremely demanding but rewarding time for students. During this experience students will progress from observing and participating in classrooms to assuming full responsibility for at least one full week of solo teaching. Observations are conducted on a weekly basis by the cooperating teacher and by the college supervisor. Students are also required to attend student teaching seminar and portfolio (if required by the program in which the student is enrolled). Student teaching will run the entire semester, comprised of two 7-week sessions. Students will observe the calendar of the cooperating school district. Student teaching is a full-time responsibility. Student teachers are required to observe the same schedule as the cooperating teacher. Student teaching will most certainly require time outside of the normal classroom hours. It is expected that the student teacher will uphold these responsibilities. While we recognize the financial responsibilities of our students, student teachers should understand that holding a job while student teaching is not recommended nor is taking other courses.
