Education Technology Specialist
The Master of Science in Educational
Technology Specialist program includes two paths leading toward
certification for teachers and related professionals to use a broad
range of technologies in their multiple roles as teacher, facilitator,
mentor, action researcher, learner, and change manager. Candidates
from all content and preparation areas are accepted into this program.
Hands-on experience and classroom activities help participants understand
and apply research and best practices on how technology can be used
to enhance learning and improve student performance.
Students are prepared to integrate technology with effective instruction
for all learners, including those with disabilities, and to support
technology initiatives in their schools. Students participate in
a variety of technology learning environments from traditional computer
labs, to innovative lab arrangements, flexible cooperative learning
environments, collaborative projects, on-line forums and distance
learning experiences.
The program provides background in foundations of education, adolescent
development, learning processes, teaching diverse populations, literacy
improvement, teaching methods, curriculum development, instructional
software and hardware.
Initial Certification
The 36-credit graduate program in Educational Technology Specialist
(ETS) leads to an MS in Education, which meet the requirements for
Initial Certification as an Education Technology Specialist (K-12).
The program assists those with an undergraduate degree in an educational
technology-related field to obtain an initial certification as an
educational technology specialist. New students in program are generally
seeking a career change, and typically have backgrounds in computer
technology, information systems technology, instructional technology,
library science, or network technologies.
Students who successfully complete the course work, student teaching
experience, and liberal arts requirements will have met the New
York State academic requirements for initial certification as an
education technology specialist (K-12).
Second Initial and Professional Certification
For applicants who already hold an initial certification in another
area, this program requires 30 credits and provides a second initial
certification. In addition, if the student meets the experience
requirement for professional certification, completion of the program
will result in the recommendation for professional certification
to the NY State Education Department as well. Students seeking a
second initial certification have completed student teaching in
a previous initial certification and are not required to complete
the supervised practica.
Graduates of the Education Technology Specialist program must
demonstrate:
professionalism in exercising their role as an education technology
specialist;
ability to plan, deliver, and evaluate appropriate integration
of technology into educational settings, and optimum educational
technology learning environments meeting the ISTE NETS standards
for students, teachers and administrators;
ability to teach diverse pupils effectively in a technology
environment
organization and positive computer lab management techniques
in a technology environment.
Requirements for Admission and College
Recommendation for New York State Certification
Admission to the program in Educational Technology Specialist (initial
certification) is contingent upon meeting general admissions requirements
for graduate study at The College of Saint Rose. In order for the
College to recommend candidates for certification in New York State,
teacher candidates must meet course work requirements in the education
sequence (i.e., the graduate program in Educational Technology Specialist),
the general education requirement, and pedagogy requirements. The
course work requirements in general education and pedagogy are not
offered as part of the graduate program (the Educational Technology
Specialist program satisfies requirements for the education sequence
only). An admissions assessment will be conducted using an assessment
tool and any deficiencies in general education or pedagogy requirements
will become co-requisites to program completion for candidates seeking
their first initial certification.
Requirements for Admission
Admission is contingent upon acceptance to graduate study at The
College of Saint Rose. General requirements include:
a complete Saint Rose graduate application
a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution
official transcripts from all colleges/universities attended
a grade point average (GPA)of 3.0 in applicant's undergraduate
major
evidence of sufficient experience in an instructional setting
to enable the applicant to integrate computing and instruction
two letters of recommendation
interview with Educational Technology faculty, if requested
international applicants may have additional requirements; please
consult the graduate catalog or e-mail Graduate Admissions at
grad@strose.edu
A transcript evaluation is part of that process. The applicant
may be required to take additional course work in either the liberal
arts or technology either before or concurrent with graduate study
if the transcript evaluator identifies any prerequisite courses
required for certification by the NY State Education Department.
Graduate advisors can assist new students with identifying relevant
course work to address prerequisites, as students cannot be recommended
by the College for certification until all deficiencies are satisfied.
