Bilingual Education Extension
Saint Rose offers the
Bilingual Extension Program to classroom teachers who are seeking
certification to teach in bilingual (Spanish/English) classroom
settings. The program is designed to provide the
theoretical and practical knowledge that teachers must have to address
the unique needs of bilingual learners.
The Saint Rose Difference
Coursework includes the study of bilingual education, Spanish linguistics,
methods for teaching native language arts and content areas, and
methods for teaching English language arts and content areas to
bilingual learners.
The Bilingual Education Extension program is designed to enable
full-time teachers to complete the program in one year. Participants
typically take one evening course during the fall semester, one
evening course during the spring semester, two evening courses during
the first summer semester, and complete the supervised field
experience during the second summer semester.
Certification and Career Opportunities
Students must earn passing scores on the New York State Target Language
(Spanish) Proficiency Assessment (prior to taking the Introduction
to Spanish Linguistics course) and the New York State English Language
Proficiency Assessment in order to become certified in bilingual
education in New York.
Field Experience
Participants complete a one-credit field experience that serves
as a capstone for the program. This College-supervised field experience
consists of at least 50 clock hours of providing bilingual education
as appropriate to the teaching certificate.
Admission Requirements
Students who are accepted to any of the master's level teacher certification
programs in the School of Education can pursue the Bilingual Education
Extension without applying directly to this program.
However, a student who wishes to enroll only in the Bilingual Education
Extension must already hold a teaching certificate in New York state
and must apply for admission to this program by fulfilling the requirements
for general graduate admission, which include:
A completed Saint Rose graduate school application
A baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution
Official transcripts from all colleges/universities attended
An undergraduate grade point average of at least 3.0
At least two letters of recommendation
International students must submit original, official transcripts,
translated into English by their college/university or professional
independent evaluator; a copy and translation of the original
diploma; and a minimum score of 550 on the Test of English as
a Foreign Language (TOEFL).
