Applied Technology Education
The master's program in Applied
Technology Education prepares people holding an undergraduate degree
in technology-related fields - including automotive, electronics,
telecommunication and information systems, and construction - to
become teachers of technology education. The program prepares participants
to obtain initial certification to teach technology in grades K-12.
New graduate students in this program are usually seeking a career
change. Currently, the program has a high placement rate for graduates,
as demand for teachers with this certification exceeds the supply
of available candidates.
Technology education is an organized program of courses that examine
how people develop solutions to present and future societal problems
using different forms of technology. Technology education teachers
must be prepared to teach children with a broad range of skills
and interests.
Core course work includes adolescent development, learning processes,
teaching diverse populations, literacy improvement, teaching methods,
curriculum development, assessment, laboratory management and safety
issues, and classroom management. The program also includes a mentored
student teaching experience.
Successful graduates of the Applied Technology Education program
demonstrate:
professionalism in exercising their role as an applied technology
teacher;
ability to plan, deliver, and evaluate appropriate, accurate,
and
knowledgeable instruction in applied technology education;
organization and positive classroom management techniques; and
ability to teach diverse pupils effectively.
Admission Requirements
For admission to the program, applicants must have a bachelor's
degree and at least 30 hours of technical background in technology
and engineering-related courses. Technical courses can include course
work in engineering, design, communication and information technology,
construction technology, electricity/electronics, and automotive
technology.
Admission is also contingent upon admission to graduate study at
The College of Saint Rose. A transcript evaluation is part of that
process. The applicant may be required to take additional course
work in either the liberal arts or technology either before or concurrent
with graduate study if the transcript evaluator identifies any prerequisite
courses required for certification by the NY State Education Department.
Graduate advisors can assist new students with identifying relevant
course work to address prerequisites, as students cannot be recommended
by the College for certification until all deficiencies are satisfied.
Requirements for Degree
The Applied Technology Education program is designed for students
who do not hold initial certification. It requires a minimum of
37 credits of study and includes a full-semester student teaching
experience.
Requirements for Certification Only
The Certification-Only program in Applied Technology Education (31
credits) is designed for students who already possess a master's
degree.
