Business & Marketing Education (Grades K-12)

Adolescence Education
The Saint Rose graduate program in Adolescence Education leads to a Master of Science in Education for those who want to teach at the secondary school level. The program in Adolescence Education provides the education course work required for initial and professional certification for Grades 7-12 in New York and reciprocal states in biology, chemistry, earth science, English, mathematics, social studies, or Spanish. It also provides the education coursework required for initial and professional certification to teach business and marketing education in Grades K-12.

Business and Marketing Education
The Saint Rose graduate program in Business and Marketing Education is designed for individuals who have earned a bachelor's degree in business and marketing. By completing the 40-credit education course work requirements for the Adolescence Education program, students can earn certification as business educators in Grades K-12 in New York state.

Certification Only
The master's degree programs in Adolescence Education and Business and Marketing Education are ideal for business professionals seeking to enter the teaching field. Students who already hold a master's degree and have at least 36 credits in their content area may apply to a 29-credit certification-only program.

The Saint Rose Difference
Small classes create an atmosphere of collegiality where students can interact and develop a network of colleagues as they are guided and facilitated by College faculty and supervisors who have had experiences in diverse classroom settings and who exemplify the reflective, scholarly, caring education professional.

In the Saint Rose education master's programs, students learn about the various needs of young learners by performing their field experiences in a variety of school districts, including those with high-needs. In addition to completing nearly 100 hours of field experiences prior to student teaching, all students complete a research seminar, EDU 590, which requires an active research project in a school setting resulting in credible, original research, often with potential for publication.

Field Experience
Students complete a one-semester student teaching experience comprised of two placements—one in Grades 7-9 and another in Grades 10-12—and a corresponding student teaching seminar. Before student teaching, students complete a 20-hour field experience in their placement school that involves a thorough analysis of home, school, student, and community composition and dynamics. These field experiences provide students with an understanding of the culture of the school—an understanding that enhances their ability to meet the needs of diverse populations.

Faculty who teach courses that require fieldwork have experience supervising students in field placements. They also have professional experience in Grades 7-12. On-site supervisors of student teachers meet regularly with faculty from the School of Education to discuss the ways in which they can better prepare graduate students to meet the challenges of today's diverse school settings. In addition, our faculty members spend time with each student serving as
mentors and providing guidance
with career objectives.

Grades 5-6 Extension
Students in the Saint Rose Adolescence Education program have the distinct advantage of being able to pursue an extension to their teaching certification, making them eligible to teach in Grades 5-12. Adolescence Education students who wish the College to recommend them to the New York State Education Department for the 5-6 Extension must complete all of the requirements for the Adolescence Education program plus six additional credits of course work.

Bilingual Extension
The College of Saint Rose offers the 13-credit Bilingual Extension to classroom teachers who are seeking certification to teach in bilingual (Spanish/English) classroom settings. The program is designed to provide the theoretical and practical knowledge that teachers must have to address the unique needs of bilingual learners. Students must earn passing scores on the New York State Target Language (Spanish) Proficiency Assessment (prior to taking the Introduction to Spanish Linguistics course) and the New York State English Language Proficiency Assessment in order to become certified in bilingual education in New York.

Career Opportunities
Saint Rose education alumni are a major force in the teaching profession and many have been nominated for and won local and national teaching awards. The College's reach into local schools is extraordinary with approximately one-third of the teachers in the Capital Region holding at least one degree from Saint Rose. Almost all students who complete the Saint Rose Adolescence Education program find employment as teachers within six months of graduation.

Career opportunities for graduates of the Adolescence Education program include classroom teacher in Grades 7-12, professional with a state education department, consultant to a private agency, and staff person for a publishing house. This program also provides a foundation for advanced certification in education administration and doctoral study.
