Music Industry
Size is the main difference between
the Saint Rose music industry program and the programs at other
colleges. We match, and, in some cases, surpass other programs.
Our smaller size gives students ample opportunity for hands-on production
work in the studios as well as opportunity to work with real clients
in various roles.
Our curriculum is similar to those at many other schools and includes
courses in songwriting , arranging, recording engineering, record
production, Pro Sound Tools, MIDI, music business, artist management
and music law. The final exit requirement at the end of the senior
year for students in the music industry program is a full-length
album of material
they have composed, arranged, rehearsed, engineered, mixed and mastered
a comprehensive capstone project that reflects their achievement.
They also function as artist managers and record producers for real
clients for two
semesters as part of course requirements.
THE SAINT ROSE DIFFERENCE
One difference between some other schools and us is the fact that
our Music Industry core includes three areas: technology, music
business and commercial music (songwriting, conducting, arranging,
etc.). We believe our
graduates need to be well versed in each of these areas because
most employment opportunities involve crossover and multitasking
in several areas of the music industry.
Another difference is the fact that Music Industry students at
Saint Rose have the same performance requirements on their major
instrument or voice that our Music Education majors have. We believe
that you must become an accomplished musician to insure success
in the music industry. You will be
working with excellent musicians throughout your career, and they
will know immediately whether or not you are also an excellent musician.
Performance Groups
Music industry majors are required each semester to participate
in one of the Colleges performing groups that entertain audiences
both on- and off-campus at local clubs, colleges and at special
events. Our music majors enjoy participating in performing groups
because it offers them the opportunity to supplement their formal
education with exciting experiences and travel. For example, the
Masterworks Chorale recently recorded and produced a CD to fund
a trip to England and Ireland. In addition, the Saint Rose Jazz
Ensemble has recorded two CDs and was the first college group to
be invited to the Newport Jazz Festival. Depending on your area
of study, you can participate in:
Brass Choir
Chamber Singers
Chamber Winds
Clarinet Choir
Classical Guitar Ensemble
Concert/Community Band
Flute Choir
Guitar Ensemble
Instrumental Jazz Ensemble I & II
Jazz Guitar Ensemble
Madrigal Singers
Masterworks Chorale
Orchestra
Percussion Ensemble
Saxophone Ensemble
String Quartets
Trumpet Ensemble
Vocal Jazz Ensemble

Professional Organizations
Saint Rose music industry majors have the option of joining two
professional organizations:
FACILITIES
In addition to classrooms and rehearsal rooms, The College of Saint
Rose Music Center houses:
the Saints and Sinners Sound Studio, a state-of-the-art production/recording
facility featuring 16-track analog and multi-track digital recording
through which students learn how to use the latest recording and
sequencing software;
a computer lab designated exclusively for music majors that
features Macintosh G4 computers equipped with the latest music
software and high-speed Internet access;
the Henry and Alice Cooper Finks Music Library, which contains
more than 5,000 recordings and audio and video equipment; and
the Patricia Brady-Danzig Performance Hall.
FIELD EXPERIENCE
The required internship often leads to future employment opportunities.
Many of our students have been hired immediately following their
internship the company has already spent three months training
them, or the on-site
supervisor is able to refer them to another company. We encourage
students to find internships directly connected to the field they
hope to be working in following graduation, preferably in New York,
Los Angeles or Nashville if
possible. Students seek out and interview for these intern positions
as if they were job hunting and make their decision in consultation
with their academic advisor.
Music industry students have interned with various record companies,
recording studios and music business organizations in the capital
district as well as New York City, including:
ASCAP
Chelsea Sound Studio
Omnitech:
Polygram Records
SONY/CBS Records
CAREERS
Our graduates have taken positions in production companies, recording
studios, intellectual property, music licensing, tour management,
music merchandising, and artist management. Many of them continue
their work as performers, songwriters and producers while working
in other areas of the music industry.
