| The
Office of Multicultural Student Affairs provides multicultural
educational programs, workshops, and events for the campus, which
are also open to the community. Its mission is to assist The College
of Saint Rose in its diversity initiatives and to assist in achieving
a more diverse faculty, student body and administrative staff. The
Office supports and assists multicultural organizations such as the
Black and Latino Student Union (BLSU/Spectrum), International Student
Organization (ISO,) as well as the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender
Student Organization (GLBT/Identity) and empowers them to have a voice
in the growth and development of the College. The
Office supports and offers many workshops on topics such as Cultural
Fluency, Creating & Managing Diversity, Prejudice Reduction,
Knowledge Acquisition on Ethnic Groups, and Contributions of Black
Americans to American Society, to name a few. It also addresses
issues and educates the community about individuals of different
races, ethnicities, and sexual orientation as well as individuals
with intellectual or physical impairment. Cultural events celebrating
various ethnic groups are also part of the enrichment programs that
educate and bring enjoyment to those of various backgrounds on campus
such as Diwali, the Indian New Year Celebration and the Chinese
New Year Celebration.
As part of the retention program for ALANA (of African, Latino,
Asian, and Native American decent) students at Saint Rose, the Office
offers the ALANA
Peer Mentor Program and a
Diversity Peer Educators Program. The goal of the Mentor
Program is to provide new students with a motivational coach that
will guide them towards success on campus. The Diversity Peer Educators
Program is designed to encourage and motivate students to grow in
their understanding of issues of diversity by facilitating dialogues
on these topics. For more details about these programs, contact
the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs.
The Office location in Avila Hall provides students with a unique
and amiable environment, which enables students to come for social
or cultural support as well as learn from the various resources
in the Office such as the Multicultural Library, diversity workshop
material, and our knowledgeable staff. The Office has a staff of
two, consisting of the Director and Administrative Secretary. Students
may also utilize the Avila Conference Room in our building, equipped
with a large dry-eraser board, dvd/vhs player and television, to
facilitate study clusters or hold meetings.
In order to keep the Saint Rose Community apprised of all of the
diversity programming, we produce the Multicultural Student
Affairs Newsletter with the assistance of our students.
Students are given the opportunity to develop, organize, and communicate
their ideas to the Saint Rose community.
The Office of Multicultural Student Affairs identifies itself as
part of the “Saint Rose Difference” and works to facilitate
a greater understanding and enjoyment of a global approach to life
while promoting diversity on the campus.
