Student Health Services
Mission
Health Services supports the
mission of the college. It provides a climate of learning and living
by helping students remove health barriers that interfere with their
academic, personal and social education.
Services
Health Services is available
to all full-time students. Part-time students who wish to use Health
Services may do so for a per-semester charge. Services provided
in Health Services include, but are not limited to, rapid strep
throat cultures and mono tests, urinalysis, and on a very limited
basis, allergy injections. Due to allergy injection limitations,
students/parents should contact Health Services at least two months
prior to the beginning of the semester.
Registered nurses are available in Health Services Monday through
Saturday during the academic year for health assessment and evaluation.
A doctor or a nurse practitioner is on campus to see and treat students
Monday through Friday (hours are posted at the beginning of each
semester) Prescriptions will be written as needed and off campus
referrals will be made if indicated. The cost of prescriptions and
off campus referrals are the responsibility of the student and/or
legal guardian(s).
Immunizations Required
Students must provide signed
proof
of immunity to measles, mumps and rubella before they can register
for more than five credits.
Online registration requires compliance
to immunization law regardless of the number of credits you wish
to take.
As of September 1, 1991 New York State enacted Public Health Law
#2165 which requires post secondary students to show proof of immunity
to measles, mumps and rubella. The law effects all students born
on or after January 1, 1957 who are planning to enroll in six credits
or more in any one semester.
The law allows certain exemptions for compliance and will waive,
either permanently or temporarily, immunization requirements for
students with special circumstances; some medical conditions, pregnancy,
certain allergies and specific religious beliefs fall into this
group of exemptions. Contact Health Services if you think you fall
into one of these categories.
Immunity Consists of:
- Measles
two doses of live measles vaccine administered after 1967.
- Mumps - one dose of
live mumps vaccine administered after 1968.
Disease documentation for measles and mumps by a physician
also qualifies as immunity. Documentation must include the year
of illness.
- Rubella - one
dose of live rubella vaccine administered after 1968.
Disease Documentation For Rubella -DOES NOT QUALIFY AS IMMUNITY.
- First dose of all vaccines must have been administered on or
after the first birthday.
- Data should be entered on the immunization
form by your physician's office and must be signed by
someone in that practice.
- Records will be accepted from other schools provided
your name appears on the same page as your immunizations, and
the page has been signed or stamped by the school sending the
record.
A Blood titer Laboratory Report
documenting immunity to measles,
mumps and / or rubella also qualifies as acceptable documentation.
Meningococcal Disease and Vaccination
New York State PHL Section 2167 requires post-secondary institutions
to distribute information about meningococcal disease and vaccination
to the student, or parents or guardians of students under the age
of 18 enrolled for six or more credit hours. The institution is
required to maintain a record of the following for each student:
- Certificate of Immunization for meningococcal meningitis disease;
or
- A response to receipt of meningococcal meningitis disease and
vaccine information signed by the student or the student’s
parent or guardian; AND, EITHER
- Self reported or parent recall of meningococcal meningitis
immunization within the past 10 years; or
- An acknowledgement of meningococcal disease risks and refusal
of meningococcal meningitis immunization signed by the student
or student’s parent or guardian.
Physicals/Health
Evaluations are required of
all athletes, international and resident students. Forms must be
on file in Health Services prior to moving onto campus or participation
in a sport.
A
Report of Health History is
required of all full-time students.
MEDICAL RECORDS
Medical records are confidential and will be released to a student
or to another school only after the student has given written permission.
There is a $3.00 charge for a non-student request, and requests
require a 24-hour time frame.
