BRIGHTEST MINDS FROM STATE’S MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOLS COMPETE IN SCIENCE CONGRESS AT SAINT ROSE

The brightest scientific and engineering minds from New York’s middle and high schools competed for prizes in the finals of the STANYS State Science Congress held Saturday, June 9, at The College of Saint Rose in Albany.

Results of the competition are as follows:

SENIOR DIVISION (Grades 9-12)

• Joanna Schlingbaum of Melville was awarded “Highest Honors” and received a gold medal and $1,000 cash prize. Schlingbaum is a student at Half Hollow Hills High School East.

• Sujay Tyle of Pittsford was awarded “High Honors” and received a silver medal and $500 cash prize. Tyle is a student at Pittsford Mendon High School.

• Crystalee Forbes of Hempstead was awarded “Honors” and received a bronze medal and $250 cash prize. Forbes is a student at Uniondale High School.

JUNIOR DIVISION (Grades 6-8)

• Brandon Shih of Great Neck was awarded “Highest Honors” and received a gold medal and $500 cash prize. Shih is a student at Great Neck South Middle School.

• Ariana Lewkowitz-Shpuntoff of Great Neck was awarded “High Honors” and received a silver medal and $250 cash prize. Lewkowitz-Shpuntoff is a student at Great Neck South Middle School.

• MacKenzie Needham of Shelter Island was awarded “Honors” and received a bronze medal and $100 cash prize. Needham is a student at Shelter Island School.

Sponsored by the Science Teachers Association of New York State (STANYS), the STANYS State Science Congress was established in 1950 as a means to stimulate interest and proficiency in the sciences. Regional science fairs are encouraged in STANYS sections across the state. Students with outstanding projects are selected to participate in the state-level event. The statewide competition is open to students in grades 6 through 12.

STANYS is New York’s oldest and most respected professional organization of science educators. Promoting excellence in science education, STANYS’ mission is to work with educators and communities to provide opportunities for all students to participate in and learn science.
