Music Technology
(Master of Arts in Music Technology)

THE SAINT ROSE DIFFERENCE
The goal of the Master of Arts degree in Music Technology is to provide opportunities for personal and career enhancement by means of advanced study in music and music technology.

OBJECTIVES
The curriculum is structured to provide each student the opportunity to:

  1. increase his or her professional competence and abilities for self-directed study and growth in the use of emerging technology; and
  2. integrate music technology and creative expression.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
In addition to fulfilling the general requirements for admission to graduate study at The College of Saint Rose, applicants must hold an undergraduate degree in music and submit a video or audio demo tape of MIDI sequencing and/or a production project.

DEGREE REQUIREMENTS
The course of study is comprised of three components: core courses, electives, and the final project.

  1. Core Courses (21 credits)
    MUS 584 Jazz Theory and Analysis (3)
    MUS 586 Analysis 2: Non-tonal Music (3)
    MUS 594 Applied Study (2)
    MUS 687, 689, 691, 692, 693, 694, 695, or 697 Ensemble (1)
    MUS 551 MIDI Studio 1 (3)
    MUS 552 MIDI Studio 2 (3)
    MUS 560 Recording Studio 1 (3)
    MUS 561 Recording Studio 2 (3)
  2. Electives (9 credits)
    Choose three from:

    MUS 553 Music Business Survey (3)
    MUS 558 Artist Management (3)
    MUS 538 Jazz/Pop Arranging (3)
    MUS 559 Arts, Aesthetics and Law (3)
  3. Final Exit Requirement (6 credits)
    MED 607-608 Practicum in Music Technology (3, 3)

FINAL EVALUATION
Students fulfill final evaluation requirements through the satisfactory completion of a thesis, research practicum or recital accompanied by a paper or lecture, depending on the area of concentration.

CERTIFICATION
This degree satisfies the academic requirements for permanent certification in music education (K-12). Students can apply for permanent certification after teaching music for two years in public or private schools and completing the exam for permanent certification.
