Music Education
(Grades K-12)
Students who major in Music Education
want to be music teachers. There is a shortage of music teachers
all over the United States, including New York State. Virtually
all of our recent graduates who have sought teaching positions have
found employment as music teachers.
THE SAINT ROSE DIFFERENCE
At The College of Saint Rose, we can make a statement that very
few colleges can makeall of our music courses are taught by
Saint Rose faculty members. While other colleges allow teaching
assistants to instruct beginning music students in ear training,
music theory, chamber music, and keyboard, at Saint Rose we believe
that the instruction of a seasoned, professional educator is essential
for establishing a strong foundation in music. In addition, all
of our student teachers are supervised by full time music education
faculty.
Performance Groups
Music education majors are required each semester to participate
in one of the Colleges performing groups that entertain audiences
both on- and off-campus at local clubs, colleges and at special
events. Our music majors enjoy participating in performing groups
because it offers them the opportunity to supplement their formal
education with exciting experiences and travel. For example, the
Masterworks Chorale recently recorded and produced a CD to fund
a trip to England and Ireland. In addition, the Saint Rose Jazz
Ensemble has recorded two CDs and was the first college group to
be invited to the Newport Jazz Festival. Depending on your area
of study, you can participate in:
Brass Choir
Chamber Singers
Chamber Winds
Clarinet Choir
Classical Guitar Ensemble
Concert/Community Band
Flute Choir
Guitar Ensemble
Instrumental Jazz Ensemble I & II
Jazz Guitar Ensemble
Madrigal Singers
Masterworks Chorale
Orchestra
Percussion Ensemble
Saxophone Ensemble
String Quartets

The Saint Rose music education
faculty members combined have nearly 100 years of practical public
school teaching experience. It is very unusual to find a music department
where every faculty member has taught in an elementary, middle or
high school classroom and it makes a big difference in the way that
we train future music teachers.
Spending four years in the music education
program at Saint Rose was one of the best decisions I have made.
The music building became a second home, and I was constantly surrounded
by supportive faculty and fellow students. I could not have felt
more prepared as I began my first teaching job this past September.
The College of Saint Rose provided me with the opportunity to grow
and mature as a student, a musician, a teacher, and a person. I
will carry with me always the people, knowledge, musicianship and
ideals that are my Saint Rose experience.
