Art Education
(Master of Science in Education)
The master of science program
in art education is accredited by the National Association of Schools
of Art and Design. While there are more than 1,000 art programs
in the U.S., fewer than 200 share this distinction with Saint Rose.
The program meets the certification needs of those who are certified
provisionally or initially in art education and are pursuing professional
certification in New York state, as well as those who have a background
in fine arts but no teaching experience.
The curriculum emphasizes studio work, offering students the opportunity
to concentrate in one of five areas: drawing/painting, sculpture,
printmaking, photography, or ceramics. Within this program, students
will become familiar with the trends of the contemporary art world
while cultivating their own artistic identities, and will develop
and articulate a personal philosophy of art and art education.
The Saint Rose Difference
The graduate program in art education emphasizes the dual role of
mature, competent artists as teachers in classroom settings, sharing
their appreciation and advanced knowledge of art with children of
all ages. No other program in New York state places an equal amount
of emphasis on the studio art concentration of the degree, yet it
is the content and objective of an art instructor. This unique method
of instruction enables students to have a thorough understanding
of the theory of teaching art and an awareness of the federal and
state standards of art education.
Another distinctive feature of the program is the blend of undergraduate
and graduate students in select methods and teaching courses. This
mix holds graduate students to a high level of expectation, as they
act as role models for younger students, setting a mature and serious
tone in areas of ethics, responsibility, class participation, and
discussion. Simultaneously, the exposure to younger students in
the classroom often inspires freshness and exuberance in graduate
projects.
Each semester, the College hosts a Visiting Artist Series for which
artists from across the country come to exhibit their work, present
workshops and lectures, and critique the work of graduate students.
Recent visitors include Christo and Jeanne-Claude, Leon Golub, Jeannie
Holtzer, Duane Michals, Jane Masters, and Paula Scher. Art students
are encouraged to meet the visiting artists who have come from many
leading institutions, including Carnegie Mellon University, Kansas
City Art Institution, the University at Albany, the Chicago Art
Institute and the Massachusetts College of Art.
Certification
This degree satisfies the academic requirement for both initial
and professional certification in art education (K-12). A master's
degree is necessary to teach art in New York state. After completing
the program and earning a satisfactory score on the New York State
Teacher Exam, students receive initial certification. Students receive
professional certification after teaching art for three years in
public or private schools and completing the exam for professional
certification. Non-credit courses in substance abuse and child abuse
must also be completed throughout the duration of the program.
The College also offers a 21-credit Certification-Only program
for candidates (artists) who already hold a master's
degree in art and are seeking initial certification so that they
may teach art in public and private schools.
Career Opportunities
Students with a master's degree in art education are qualified to
teach art in New York state in levels K-12, or work in educational
programs in museums across the country. Most graduates find employment
prior to or immediately upon completion of the program. Currently,
graduates are employed as teachers in several local and regional
schools, including St. Pius Schools (Loudonville, NY), Lake George
High School, South Glens Falls High School, and Farnsworth Middle
School (Guilderland, NY).
Field Experience
As part of the curriculum, each student spends an entire semester
teaching in assigned grades at local Catholic schools that do not
have art teachers on staff. By participating in this component of
the program, students learn valuable teaching skills while opening
the world of art to children who may not otherwise share in such
an experience. Furthermore, an additional semester of student teaching
is required, where those pursuing a degree in the program will work
with students at the elementary, middle, or high school levels.
Students in the art education master's program have student taught
in the following school districts:
Albany
Bethlehem
Glens Falls
Niskayuna
North Colonie
Saratoga
Schenectady
Scotia-Glenville
Shenendehowa
South Colonie
Research
The research component of the master's program in art education
is a vital part of the curriculum, enabling students to receive
hands-on experience as artists outside the classroom. Graduate assistantships
are available to give students the opportunity to assist the College's
art historian and art educator in the research. Current programs
include a student-teaching handbook, a textbook with unique approaches
to teaching art, curating exhibitions in various art centers, and
the development of an art history course for the College.
Facilities
The Center for Art and Design at The College of Saint Rose is located
in the heart of the Center Square neighborhood, Albany's "Village"
within the city, just a five-minute walk from the New York State
Museum and the Albany Institute of History and Art. The 31,500 square-foot
Center is a place where students nurture their talents, hone their
skills, and satisfy their artistic passions. Facilities within the
building include:
Personal studio space for painting/drawing and sculpture students;
Individual studio spaces designed to accommodate students working
on screen printings, etchings, and lithography;
Three full-scale black and white and color dark rooms for photography
students; and
Two state-of-the-art graphic design computer labs featuring
30 networked Macintosh workstations supporting the latest versions
of design and illustration software, color printers, file servers,
flatbed scanners, and digital photography equipment.
Final Evaluation
Final evaluation is based on the student's presentation to the comprehensive
assessment committee in preparation for the Master Show. The committee
is composed of three graduate faculty members including the student's
major studio instructor. The Master Show gives students a focused,
intense studio experience as they prepare and assess their projects
for display and analysis.
