About the Center for
Art & Design
The Foundation Year
The
Saint Rose foundation year is an intensive introduction to art and
design principles and practices. The curriculum explores problem
solving and critical thinking through
concepts, methods, and materials common to all art
disciplines. Combining history and literary criticism, the study
of art history invites all students to see themselves within
a wider context, to explore historical or critical views on art,
and to immerse themselves in the personal subjective process. In
so doing, each student comes to understand how his or her values
corroborate with the rich, kaleidoscopic world of the visual arts.
By the end of the first year, students are prepared for sophomore
study in one of three art majors.
