Certificate of Advanced Study in Music Education Based on information from the 2006-2008 Catalog of Graduate Studies

The goal of the certificate program is to provide individuals who possess an undergraduate degree, the opportunity to earn initial (provisional) New York State certification to teach music.

Admission Requirements

1. All applicants must pass an entrance audition with members of the Music department faculty. For examples of appropriate audition repertoire, please consult the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) manual, Levels IV, V, and VI, or the equivalent manual from another state music education association.

Instrumentalists should prepare at least one solo from the standard repertoire for their primary instrument.

Guitarists and bassists are encouraged, but not required, to audition on acoustin instruments.

Percussionists should demonstrate skills on at least two of the following percussion units: snare drum, timpani, keyboard percussion, and multiple percussion. Basic skills on drum sets are desired but not required.

Pianists are expected to demonstrate knowledge of scale and apeggio routines, perform at least two constrasting solos from the standard repertoire and sight-read.

Organists will perform a solo organ selection, play a hymn, demonstrate manual and pedal technique and sight-read.

Vocalists should be prepared to rpesent two solos fro memory and to sight-read. One solo should be in English, and the second in another language. An accompanist will be provided for the audition should a student not be able to bring his/her own.

2. Applicants with an undergraduate music degree that lacks a music education component must submit transcripts for evaluation to determine their individual requirements in music and education for the initial certificate.

3. Once students have successfully completed initial certification requirements and meet the other criteria for acceptance, they can be matriculated into the Master of Science in Education (Music Education) degree program.
